We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Turquoise Music. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Turquoise below.
Turquoise, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
At the tender age of three, I strutted my stuff down the runway for Macy’s kids store, blissfully unaware of the impact it would have on my future career choices. Fast forward to age nine, and I found myself questioning my mother’s decision to enroll me in modeling and ballet. “Mom, why did you put me in ballet and modeling?” I asked, perplexed by the choice.
With a knowing smile, she replied, “Because it’s what you love and you’re good at it! And trust me, finding something you love to do and making money from it is the ultimate life hack. Most folks dread their jobs, but not you!”
Those words echoed in my mind as I grew older, especially when doubts crept in during my quest to get my music on TV. Doubt whispered in my ear, saying, “Maybe Mom was wrong. Maybe this is just wishful thinking.” But I persisted because creating music was my passion, my joy.
Then, like a bolt from the blue, it happened. I scored my first music placement and received my first publishing check. As I held that check in my hands, disbelief washed over me. “Wait, I just made money doing something I love? Is this real life?” I exclaimed, dumbfounded.
From that moment on, I chased placements like a dog after a bone. And you know what? They kept coming! My tunes found their way onto every major syndicated network in the US, and even made waves in countries like Brazil, Japan, and Italy.
So, here I am, living proof that Mom’s advice was golden. Find what you love, do it with all your heart, and who knows? You might just end up getting paid for it – and laughing all the way to the bank!
Turquoise, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Let me take you on a journey into the whirlwind world of entertainment, where my story begins with a sprinkle of stardust and a whole lot of mom wisdom.
You see, I didn’t just dip my toes into the entertainment pool; I cannonballed in headfirst! Thanks to my mom’s master plan (or maybe just her love for arts), I found myself juggling modeling gigs, ballet classes, jazz rehearsals, and even some acrobatics. Talk about a childhood that’s anything but boring!
Being a performer isn’t just a career choice for me; it’s practically part of my DNA.
But the real plot twist came at 13 when I scored my first scholarship – the coveted Ann Weeks Opera Scholarship. Suddenly, I went from school plays and choir to serenading audiences with my operatic prowess.
Those early days of singing, dancing, and embracing every creative whim set the stage for my multi-hyphenate career. DJ? Check. Singer/songwriter? Yes mam. Author, stylist, creative mastermind, and even director? Why pick just one passion when you can have them all?
I’m not just in it for love of the arts; I’m also a fierce advocate for indie artists, wielding my pen (and my turntables) to empower the underdogs of the music scene. From writing books to teaching classes, I’m on a mission to help aspiring artists navigate the wild world of film, TV, and music admin like a pro.
And as if that weren’t enough, my production company, Turquoise Productions, is flying the flag for women in film and TV as a proud Corporate Sponsor of WIFTA. Because let’s face it, behind every great woman is a squad of other great women cheering her on!
As a singer/DJ, I’ve taken my talents on a global tour, spinning beats and spreading joy from Thailand to Puerto Rico. But you know what truly fills my heart with pride? Seeing the artists I’ve mentored and championed step into the spotlight and own it like the rockstars they were born to be.
I’m one of those people that thinks we should all embrace every facet of who we are, chasing our wildest dreams, and proving that in the colorful tapestry of media, art, and entertainment, there’s room for all of us to shine.
I am currently working on a visual album. Meaning every song will have a visual attached. I’m excited about this project because the music is Executive Produced by me and the accompanying music videos are directed and edited by me. The album is an EDM/House music album. The name of the Album is “Bionic Woman”
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2020, in the middle of the Pandemic, I was T-Boned by a woman texting on her phone, driving 45mph. The impact sent me and my car into a spin and wrapped me against a pole. As a result of the accident, I had to have my knee rebuilt, hip labral replacement, Radiofrequency ablation in my lower back and metal disks replace the disks in my neck. I didn’t share my journey with Social Media in depth, but I had to learn how to walk upright again, eat again. It changed my life forever and yet I healed faster than any of my seven doctors had ever seen. During my doctors visits, the employees would poke their head in my room and bring the new employees to meet the “Bionic Woman”, what everyone in the doctors office dubbed as my official nickname. This is probably the most I’ve ever shared about that time in my life.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before Covid, I was teaching Indie Artists how to get their music on Film/TV in a classroom setting in Midtown Atlanta. When we went on lockdown and couldn’t have public gatherings, I had to pivot. I took my curriculum from the classes I was giving and turned it into a book.
