Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tunisia Macklin . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tunisia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents allowed me to experience their journey in pregnancy, labor and parenting. My mother and great grand Mother are why I am a Doula and started my business. I am the oldest of 4 and I was able to walk through my mother’s pregnancy and breastfeeding journey with each pregnancy. It was one of the best experiences of my childhood. My mother taught me about having power in picking your provider, making sure your voice is heard, natural labor and birth. This experience wasn’t just through her telling me. I learned this through observation as well. she did everything she taught me. I believe this was the most memorable and impactful experience.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Tunisia Macklin, a Wife to my amazing Husband, Mother to a 9-year-old little princess and to my furry baby and Owner of Peaceful Birthing Services. I am a Doula, Placenta Encapsulator, Massage Therapist and Women’s Health and Wellness Herbalist. I have been a massage therapist for 20 years and Doula for 10 years. I became a massage therapist while trying to find myself. I was done with corporate America. I was stressed and in physical pain all the time. My Mother and I sat down and evaluated what I truly wanted to do. I at the time wanted to be a nurse. Unfortunately, to be a nurse you need to be able to handle blood. So, that was the start of my journey with massage. I knew I wanted to be a part of people healing path it just took a while to figure it out. As time went on, I became a Faculty Adjunct Massage instructor for my Alma Mater. A colleague noticed that I support friends and families in birth. This was the introduction to the term Doula. My colleague and I found a program and soon after became doulas together.
Being raised with women who understood what the human body and a woman’s body was capable of gave me courage to want to fight for women who would like to experience a safe, undisturbed and beautiful birthing experience. I started to consider how can I service my clients better. With the combination of massage and doula support I felt I was still missing something. Soon after I was trained in placenta encapsulation. I started to meet women who were experiencing infertility. I remembered my own battle with conception and so I started to look into how I could help women conceive naturally without putting themselves through the emotions of things like IVF. After research it brought me back to what our original roots are in allowing the earth to heal us. This is when I started a program and became a women’s health and wellness herbalist.
Peaceful Birthing Services mission is to serve, support and educate women on their journey to conception, pregnancy and healing. This was a passion for a while, Now, I am able to support them in a way I could not have ever imagined. My Doula Practice Peaceful Birthing Doula look to establish relationships with other providers that can help my clients with their journey. When clients come to Peaceful Birthing Doula my hope is that they will gain confidence with the information provided for them whether it is Massage, Herbs, conception, birth and postpartum recovery. we also, are a milk depot and dispensary that has partnered with Mother’s Milk Bank of the western Great lake. We provide a safe place to donate milk and purchase human milk if need for their babies.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The majority of my Doula practice has been built based on relationship with others and my prescence of social media. I started out going into groups introducing myself and business to the people in the groups. when I was available to offer services I would post. I would post testimonial. Everyday I would make sure to engage in some way online.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell my herbal teas and body butter on my website. I have at the moment chosen not to utilize any other platform. I like to customize my product and change it up often. continuing on this path allows me to have more freedom in my product creativity until I feel that I am ready to use other platforms.
