Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tuan Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tuan, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Back in my youth I’d gotten a chance to see my father create these elaborately vibrant oil paintings. I’d practice anatomy from his books and even saw a glimpse of what the art world was like. This early education drove me have comfort and practice in many hard moments.
In younger years, I’d been raised heavily by my grandmother. And towards my teenage years, my uncle had a heavy influence. Each kin taught me the beauty and pain of making the best out of not much. And as I reached my varsity years, I’d meet many influential people that helped mold my discussion to work.
In so many ways, the people in my life simply let me know that what I wanted I’d need to create myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’d gotten into the creative industry after high school. My senior year was coming to an end; I was living between a few of my family’s homes, my grades were trash, I was missing credits, I had over 80 days absent due to skipping school to hang out in the band room or go to an arcade. Yet, I’d just got my first business license for a clothing brand earlier in the year.
My mother was working at an embroidery shop operating out of Navy Pier. I’d spent some of that time skipping school to work when I could to make money heat pressing hats and just monitoring the machines when she needed to go to the rest room or even take a nap. There, the owner of the shop and my mother gave me a lot of the knowledge on the quality of piece I wanted to create.
As the semester closed, my mother offered me a choice of doing one more year in high school or finding work. A while before she’d asked me, an employee at a neighboring store informed me she worked for a marketing compliant that were looking for interns. So, I decided to take the internship to gain the experience I saw I needed to develop my skills in marketing, design, fine arts, and communication all in one office.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My current goal is to provide art supplies, real estate, artist development and agency services to the public by way of community ran live/work spaces.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think society can best support artists by listening to them. They should understand that each of us are unique and operate at different capacities. Yet, we share the same goal to create, share what we may feel, and maintain the cultural power we have individually. Providing a thriving ecosystem to artists comes by way of creating a space for creative expression to be realized, seen, and then absorbed or not, but preserving the option to have created it at all. And knowing this, society can help us preserve the spectacle culture of the artist itself.
