We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Truly Yours Coordinators. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Truly Yours below.
Truly Yours, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
Becoming a Business owner is a thought that crosses everyone’s mind but many don’t take the dive to do. There are many things that have driven us to want to create a Latina owned wedding planning company but at the top of the list would have to be our parents.
Growing up a second generation immigrant we watched our parents work 6-7 days a week to simply ensure we had everything that life had to offer, never nothing luxurious but a monthly dining out was luxury enough for us. Day in and Day out we watched them wake up before us and go to sleep after us with barely ever sitting down to rest because working was all they knew to make sure they can provide for us and give us the life they never had in their native country. We didn’t know it at the moment but that really has made a huge impact in our lives, we always have a younger version of our parents in mind.
Our parents would always say, “Tienes que luchar para lograr en la vida”, which really basically means “You have to work for what you want”. This is something that we thought about what is something that we wouldn’t mind working long hours on because we generally wanted to. We both had a passion for organization and weddings that it was a no brainer. They taught us that once you love what you do, everything will come naturally.
Our parents are our biggest supporters in our business today and we owe it to them to succeed.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Our names are Jeannie Medina and Karen Nunez-Rodriguez and together we founded Truly Yours Coordinator to help engaged couples make wedding planning fun. We are two friends who have a passion for organization and planning that decided to join forces and give our brides a friend to lean on during the planning process. We are wedding coordinators but consult our couples throughout the process by sending them tips & tricks, giving them guidance, and providing them great vendors that share the same passion that we do.
We have coordinated over 100 weddings, have increased our team from 2 staff members to now 6, have created a business from nothing, all while reminding ourselves that the reason we came into this was because this was our calling. As two Latin women of faith, we believe strongly that God gives everyone a gift and ours was this and we hold Jesus at the center of our business in all decisions we do.
How’d you meet your business partner?
This story is one of those that we always look at each other and laugh at because truthfully neither one of us can pin point the exact day we met. Jeannie’s then boyfriend was always really good friends with Karen’s then boyfriend and our circles already were always somehow intertwined. All we know is after years of just being acquaintances we started to talk more and realized how much we had in common but yet are so different.
We both are from Dominican heritage, both have curly hair, and while those are traits don’t define us solely what truly makes us a great partnership is our ability to just know what each other are thinking. We both have the same morals which have led our business to thrive as we both are just as involved. We both rely on each other’s strengths in our business and trust each other with those responsibilities.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As Millenials, we both grew up with social media but never used it in the capacity that we are using it now. We knew that social media presence was critical to our success overall and neither one of us were amped about it. At first we started to want to showcase our weddings with these beautiful images and then after about a year we realized that we weren’t really giving our audience who we are.
We started to just record ourselves, and continue to leverage this platform to do what we love which is to help brides throughout the planning process all while having fun! We know that social media can be a burden to many business owners but what I can suggest is to just take a step back and realize that your social media should be a reflection of you and if YOU were looking and shopping for services, would you like the person on the reels?
