Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tru Watson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tru, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I am from a little town in Georgia named Griffin. At the beginning of 2023, my hometown was damaged by 3 tornadoes. It was really catastrophic. Some people lost everything. Being that I am a chef, I consider food to be my love language, so I decided to give away hot meals for families in need. I never asked for help, but once word got out, people began reaching out to offer their time and donations. This was something I wanted to do to show support For my community, but in the end, they supported me as well. I received so many encouraging words and honestly that tiny moment is what motivates me today. It mattered so much to me that my community saw my business as an ally.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been into cooking. Growing up, I would cook for my brother and I while our parents were at work. I would always imagine having my own restaurant that people would come from all over to try. I’ve always wanted the name of my restaurant to be “It Don’t Matter”, because when you ask everyone what they want to eat they say, “It Don’t Matter”. This dream followed me into adulthood and became hard to ignore. It felt like God was forcing me into my dream and I eventually had to honor it. I remember getting a job at a sports bar to save money for a food truck, but unfortunately this didn’t work out. So, I took my tips from the only night that I worked and decided to buy a business license and sell pre-ordered plates. That night, when I went to bed, I had no idea what my first plate would be but it came to me in a dream: Fried Catfish, Creamy Mashed Potatoes, and Stuffed Shrimp. I didn’t even know what to stuff the shrimp with, but I figured it out. Since then, I have been catering events and selling food.
It Don’t Matter Cafe is known for food presentation. I love to present my food based on the occasion (Christmas, birthday, summer, etc.). I really think that my presentation is what sets me apart from other food businesses and I am very proud of it. I also think that our name sets us apart from the competition. I constantly hear people say “It Don’t Matter” when they are asked what they want to eat and their friend will say “It Don’t Matter is closed today, pick something else”. It makes my heart smile so big because someone requested It Don’t Matter Cafe, even if it was on accident

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has been networking. Social media is huge! Most people hear about a place and immediately go to social media to find the business. I make it my mission to keep my social media accounts organized and up to date. I even do client raffles and giveaways to get more engagement from my clients and social media followers.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by being consistent. Sometimes, business owners want everything to be perfect, so we spend a lot of time trying to edit clips and record special content instead of just posting what we already have. No one will see your work if you are not posting it.
My advice would be to build your audience engagement. Likes are not the only way that your audience can engage with your page. Find cool ways to for them to choose the content they would like to see, ask them questions so they can respond in your comments, or do giveaways. Anything you can think of that gets your page buzzing.
