We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tru Marshall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tru, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I always found it hard for people to listen and understand my plight. I wanted to create a platform for people like me, who didn’t have a place to talk about uncomfortable situations. I didn’t have a platform to voice my issues and struggles. TruTalk is just that! A place for individuals to talk about their experiences without judgement. A place to get motivation. For people to have a “voice wrapped in love”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a hard worker. I mean that literally. I always take on a task to my best ability. I also have had struggles with not feeling heard. I created TruTalk to give people a voice to speak their minds. To discuss not so popular subjects. And it worked. So many people had breakthroughs and were able to conquer their demons and heal. I love this. I personally had to fight alone. I know how hard that is. So TruTalk is here so others won’t feel alone in their struggle to fight. I’m looking forward to more panel discussions in the future and to complete a podcast series.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to sit and meditate on my next subject of motivation. I center myself and pray about what I’m going to speak on. Motivation is a soul connection. You have to be intentional on your message and how you deliver it. It can take some time depending on what’s being looked at to discuss, but it’s worth it every time.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe it’s hard for non-creatives to understand the mind of a creative. It’s a constant battle between what’s needed versus what’s popular. There are so many outlets that pull at you but remaining focused is key. Creatives have so much to juggle and sometimes it’s hard to push ideas one at a time. One will find themselves wanting to execute more than what’s needed at the moment. Every thought is overwhelming. Time seems to crunch every second and if the focus is not primary, then consistency can fall short. Creatives need room to breathe, think, and stay motivated.
