We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Troy Spader. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Troy below.
Troy, appreciate you joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
This is one of those stories where we go from wanting a way out to something growing from a partnership with 20+ years of experience.
My wife and I own CrossHope Cleaning LLC in Denton, Texas and we started the business in 2019 after layoffs at Peterbilt left me looking for my next adventure. We were off to a great start and then COVID hit Texas. We sat at the same level for about 12 months before we started to grow again. We have always had a hard time with staffing and after being hacked in early 2023 and losing access to our website/Google/Social media and other accounts we were ready to throw in the towel.
I contacted a Dallas business sales broker who said I was just not big enough for them to list my business for sale but he knows a guy who loves helping small cleaning companies. He asked if it was okay to share my number and I agreed.
I expected to get a call and an offer for the whole business, but what happened next changed the entire direction and outlook for the way I do business and how I view all aspects of my business.
I received a phone call on August 3rd, 2023 at 1:00 pm from Greg Shepard with Dallas Maids LLC shockingly, instead of buying my commercial cleaning business, he wanted to partner with me and teach me how to staff the cleaning jobs so I could focus on the business growth and development.
August 21st, 2023 Denton Maids LLC was born and is approaching our 1st anniversary. Greg taught me how to hire and train my teams to allow me to focus on running a cleaning business without the stress and burnout I was feeling from doing the office work and cleaning all alone. When I was ready to give up and walk away to start a new career in an entirely different field, Greg saw something in me that I had lost and wanted to encourage me to continue and grow in the business field I had spent years developing a following in.
This is evidence enough for me to say that you cannot do business alone without facing burnout and it takes a team to build the dream. With the right people in your corner, the sky is the limit.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello everyone! I’m excited to share a bit about my journey in the cleaning industry. My passion for cleaning began when I was a firefighter and had to clean up equipment and the station every shift. This initial spark led me to pursue a career in commercial cleaning, where I have been able to blend my creativity and skills to make a meaningful impact.
Currently, I offer cleaning for homes, offices, carpets, windows, exterior pressure washing as well as other services. My focus is on [mention any specific aspects of your work, such as quality, sustainability, or innovation], which helps my clients stand out in a competitive market.
One of the main problems I aim to solve for my clients is giving back the time lost to cleaning. I believe what sets me apart from others in the industry is our focus to not only be the most reputable cleaning company but to stand behind our services.
I am most proud of being recognized as one of the top three cleaning companies in the DFW metroplex. This accomplishment embodies my dedication to quality and innovation.
For those interested in my work, I want you to know that our goal is to care for you and your family’s cleaning needs like you are our family. My goal is to not just provide a service or product but to foster a community of creativity and collaboration.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about me and my journey in [your industry]. I look forward to connecting with you and exploring how we can work together to achieve your goals!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2017 my wife and I got a wild hair to pack up and move to Texas. I sold the insurance agency I had built over the past 6 years and packed everything we owned into a Uhaul to head for Texas. Little did we know that everything we thought would happen would have turned out so different. We have found our path and partners here in Texas and we can develop the dream that we had envisioned for our future.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Trying to run a medium to large business all on your own will break you mentally. I have always tried to control all aspects of my business and I have not been good at delegating duties. This is a setup for mental fatigue and burnout. The only way to scale a business and not face burnout is to have a great team and we have the best team we could have ever imagined. I had to learn to let go of trying to do everything alone and allow my team to handle important things, as they care about Denton Maids just as much as we do. We would not be nearly as successful as we are without the support and commitment of our team. This is a HUGE thank you to everyone at Denton Maids who has made us what we are!
