Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Troy Gathers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Troy , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
One unforgettable experience was meeting Les Brown at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. I had literally been listening to one of his motivational speeches just days before spotting him in the airport. I approached Mr. Brown, introduced myself, and told him about my latest book at the time, Take Me With You, Vol. II: The 7 Types of Friends. He listened attentively, offered thoughtful feedback, and we even exchanged contact information. It was a surreal moment, connecting with one of my favorite thinkers after my flight back home.

Troy , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an author, entrepreneur, and PhD Candidate dedicated to helping people grow through self-awareness, purpose, and empowerment. Most recently, I’ve made headlines for publishing 10 books while pursuing my PhD.
My journey started from a passion for storytelling and a desire to inspire others to think deeper. Writing became my way of reaching people one story, one lesson, one moment at a time. I credit my desire to help others to my Great-Grandmother and Grandmother. Throughout my entire childhood, I was groomed to be God fearing, honest, respectful and a resource to help others. These qualities are rare these days, so my admiration for my mothers only increase day by day.
I first gained traction through my book series Take Me With You, which explores real world lessons and emotional intelligence through the lens of friendship and human connection. It’s a blessing to see my quotes are everywhere. There are companies that use my quotes in memes and people like Author T. Harv Eker, Duke Basketball Assistant Coach Will Avery and many others tweeting and posting my quotes online. The Troy Gathers brand is centered on helping people navigate life with intention and authenticity. My motto is BE YOU. I pride myself on starting with humble beginnings with a fire burning inside to finish as one of the greatest thinkers ever. When I graduated from South Carolina State University and returned to my hometown, I realized the opportunities God blessed me with most people didn’t have. From then, I gave back. I built websites for free, marketed peers to my network, and presented opportunities to people that may have never had those chances. It was in these times, I wanted to help on a greater scale. I found passion in seeing people win.
My mission is to inspire the youth and those that feel defeated, whether it’s through my books, speaking engagements, or media projects, I aim to spark pain into purpose. I believe what sets me apart is my relatability as I speak from experience, not regurgitated information. I’ve lived the highs and lows that shape resilience, and I use that transparency to connect with audiences on a real level. I don’t sugarcoat anything, my moniker is, The Tough Love Coach. If you’re not serious about growing we probably won’t get along. I take elevation very seriously.
I’m most proud of seeing how my words and projects have impacted others from readers who say my work helped them reframe their mindset, to young adults who found the confidence to chase their dreams through my story. That’s what keeps me moving forward, from the Pjs to the PhD.
Ultimately, I want people to know that no matter where they start, their story still has value, and their purpose still matters. Look in the mirror and see that you only need You and God. Change starts now.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that reflects my resilience is rooted in consistency and belief system. Throughout my journey as an entrepreneur and author, I’ve learned that resilience isn’t always about bouncing back, sometimes it’s about showing up every single day, no matter what. For most of my adult life, I’ve been a full-time student, entrepreneur and held a career.
There were times when inspiration came easily, and other times when discipline had to take the lead. But I made a commitment to keep creating, to keep learning, and to keep pushing my vision forward. That dedication led to publishing multiple books, nearing the completion of a Doctorate degree and building a platform centered on purpose and growth.
For me, resilience means having faith in your process even when no one’s watching, and trusting that your hard work will open the right doors at the right time. It’s about staying grounded in who you are and where you’re going. Positive energy keeps me moving forward. If nobody else got you, GOD GOT YOU.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, there are definitely resources I wish I had known about earlier in my creative journey. When I first started, much of my progress came through hands-on experience and learning by trial and error. Over time, I realized how valuable it is to leverage the tools and networks available to entrepreneurs.
Access to platforms that simplify publishing, branding, and digital marketing can make an enormous difference. Equally important are mentorship programs and professional networks that allow for collaboration, shared insights, and growth opportunities. Engaging with like-minded professionals early on can accelerate your path by having access to peers that may have opportunities available to you when needed.
Ultimately, I’ve learned that people thrive when they are supported and have the focus to utilize what’s available to them. A proper foundation not only enhances your output but also helps you build a sustainable blueprint for long-term success. Always remember, Your network is your net worth.
Also, before I go, I want to send a special, “I miss you,” to my recently deceased cousin Angel Capers. Please readers, love your family because life is short.
