We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Troy Foss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Troy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was the kid that banged on the pots and pans and drummed on everything from the counter to the steering wheel. From a young age I was a drummer, even making my parents drive through a blizzard to buy, used, my first drum set! From drumming, I was introduced to multi track recording on a 4-track tape machine. At that point I was hooked. I loved the recording process, even at the early stages of limited track counts and availability to equipment. I soon got my first 4-track, and the rest is history. Continuing that passion even today with the latest recording software and hardware, the excitement to create is always an amazing journey.
Troy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Troy Foss and I’m the Head Engineer at Supple Studios in Bemidji MN. I have always had a love for music and a passion for recording and Mixing music. My music story starts in High School where I was a drummer in multiple bands. I was always fascinated with the recording process. From this love of recording, I went on to pursue a degree in Recording Arts from Full Sail Real World Education, in Winter Park Florida. After graduating Full Sail, I moved to Los Angeles to further pursue recording. In Los Angeles, I got the opportunity to work with some of the best recording and mixing engineers along with other very talented musicians. In 2006 I started Supple Studios in Bemidji, MN. Bringing my LA recording knowledge with me I have grown Supple Studios from a very humble recording service out of my car to a full-service Pro Tools facility with the latest recording and mixing technology.
Supple Studios is an audio recording studio that is a haven for artists of many different genres. We are proud to offer a comfortable recording environment where artists can feel free to create in while having the latest in recording technology at their disposal. We love taking a recording project from an idea in an artist head to releasing it to the world for their fans to hear. Always working closely with the artist and doing what is right for the song.
Our online mixing and mastering services have been another great tool for artists to take advantage of. We can also take a song idea and hire studio musicians to fulfill a production.
“Hear the Difference” is our tagline, and we strive to bring the best every day.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a recording/mixing engineer, I get the opportunity to craft the sonic space and image of the song. To give the song the emotion and direction that it needs to convey the story and message of the songwriter. The best feeling is always helping artist raise the bar on their music and getting their music noticed.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think there is a lot we can do to help and support artists. This can be as simply liking and sharing an artist’s link on social media to going to a show. You can subscribe to their email list or YouTube channel. The best way is always to go to their show, buy their music, t-shirt, or their artwork!
