Hi Troy DeVolld, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
In creating The Troy DeVolld Company after 23 years of working for other production companies and publishers, I hope to be able to express myself and my passions more fully and with an eye toward appreciating the glorious uncelebrated weirdness of a life well-lived.
Troy DeVolld, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At its core, The Troy DeVolld Company is an unscripted company focused on microbudget documentaries and reality shows of all stripes and sizes in addition to functioning as a rights-holding organization for my published works like AND ANOTHER THING and the ONE HUNDRED POEMS ABOUT LOS ANGELES series.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve loved reality television for years, but with a massive production stall affecting so many friends and fellow pros in ’23, I thought it was time to tie up loose ends and lean into making more opportunities for myself instead of waiting around for phone calls. It’s been slow going, but I believe it’s the only real route to a rewarding future.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I didn’t make the decision to commit to television until 1994 or 5, when I abandoned a career in independent comics publishing to pursue television full time. Arriving in LA in August of 2000, I was presented with an opportunity to work in reality television, which I took to like an otter to a diet of shellfish. The most recent wave of reality had yet to establish its big makers, and I hoped to become known as a maker invested in quality work. 50 shows and a feature or two later, I’m a leading expert on reality tv, speaking at events like MASTERS OF STORY and STORY EXPO in addition to authoring two popular books about process, REALITY TV and AND ANOTHER THING. I’d have had no idea where reality tv would lead me 30 years ago, but it’s a long way from where comic books were headed.
