We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Troublesome County a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Troublesome County, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Especially in the country music industry, there’s this big divide across the different types of music which all fall under the umbrella of country music. Right now, Texas country is this huge rebellion against what’s happening in Nashville, with all the pop influence and the very generic, auto-tuned sounds. Pop country has really altered the meaning of what true country is. For hundreds of years, country music has been a true form of music that focuses on the real and raw sounds of what music is organically. To be 100% honest, it’s not even the pop influence so much that causes such a riff, from our perspective. It’s more about the lack of originality, and the control it has over artists throughout the industry. It’s a hold they have over us that says you have to be a certain way, or you won’t make it. It’s become a competition in which only pop country artists can win. Country music has always been full of outlaws who couldn’t be controlled, and to us that’s the essence of what country music is. That’s why to us, choosing to go the Texas country route is much more than just choosing a genre, it’s about choosing to fight for a place in the industry where we all belong, and bringing this genre we love so much back to life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Troublesome County is a band we formed out of a love for the things that make us all different. We love artists who have a uniqueness about them that can’t be taught, and that’s the kind of artist we want to be. In a music era like the one we’re in right now, it takes a lot to be a band that stays true to the kind of music you love, regardless of the state of the industry. We are proud to be a part of the Texas Country music scene, which is fighting to be heard as independent artists who do things their way, or no way. We are happy to put in the same amount of work that would usually require an entire team, just so we can have the ability to do what we love on our terms. It’s worth so much more to us than just the fame to be able to take the bull by the horns and say, “This is who we are, and this is what we stand for. Take it or leave it.” And we firmly believe this kind of approach will take us much further in the long run.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When we first started out, we were based out of Lubbock, but we decided pretty early on that we wouldn’t stay there forever. We were in search of a bigger music scene, where there would be more venues & where the possibilities would be endless….and that’s when we decided to move to Fort Worth. Texas Country was booming there, with lots of support for the movement and very little pop influence. It took us two years to finally pull the trigger and make the move, but once we did, we didn’t regret our decision. It took us a few months, but we made friends in the Fort Worth music scene faster than we ever had before, and the music venues we played—even just starting out—were much better venues than we had expected. Now it’s been about eight months, and we’re excited to continue moving forward with our music careers here.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Another interesting aspect about Troublesome County is that both the lead singers/cofounders are married. We met in college, going to school for music, and it didn’t take long for us to start playing music together. We didn’t officially name Troublesome County until after we were married, but the band has been very much the center of our lives throughout our entire relationship.
