Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trixie Torres. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Trixie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I was a high school teacher at the time and decided that I wanted to start writing for businesses. I made the executive decision of changing my LinkedIn profile occupation from teacher to freelance writer. It was a difficult task to do because who was I to call myself a writer when I had no experience writing for anyone but nevertheless, I believed in myself.
Within days of changing my status, I had a client reach out to me via LinkedIn and asked if I was interested in writing their blogs for their immigration law practice. I knew very little about law and immigration but decided to take a leap of faith. We got on a discovery call and that week I landed my very first paying client. Generally, freelancers have to pitch to clients and sell their services, but I was lucky enough to land my first client within days. One of the biggest takeaways from this experience was that I believed in myself and knew I was ready to embrace all the challenges coming my way.

Trixie , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Trixie Torres and I am a freelance copywriter in the health and wellness industry with a focus on holistic care, nutrition, mental health and personal development.
I’ve enjoyed writing, storytelling, and reading books since I was in the 3rd grade. It was my way of escaping reality and traveling to different places. I also know that reading, writing and knowledge are imperative and have power!
I began my copywriting business after the pandemic. Prior to that, I was teaching English at the high school level, but felt that I was not embracing my true calling, which was writing. At the same time, I was going through mental and physical health issues and began looking into different avenues to naturally heal my body. That’s when I discovered functional and holistic medicine and my healing journey began. I realized that this was my passion and what I was going to write about.
I offer clients SEO blogs, email marketing, web copy, content writing, landing pages, social media copywriting, content, ghostwriting, copyediting, and more. I am both a copywriter and a digital marketer– I don’t just write words – I study, research, and take the time to understand my client’s business and goals. I help my clients solve problems by effectively telling their brand story and focus on crafting compelling copy that highlights their products and services – their unique value proposition – that resonates with their customers and motivates them to take action.
Nothing makes me prouder than empowering people to take control of their health and wellbeing. The clients I work with are breaking down old barriers to information and providing people with the tools they need to live their best lives. I partner with health and wellness businesses that promote healthy lifestyles, nutrition, mental health, and exercise. Their work gives people hope – hope that they can achieve full-body vitality and live life to the fullest potential.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One of the ways that helped me build a reputation within the market was to label and market myself as an expert in the field. Although I was still in the learning phase, I had to position myself that I was the right person to approach when it came to health copywriting. In addition to research and learning from different systems, it’s important to network and learn as much as possible from experts. Its also important to remember, the market continues to change and pivoting is likely to occur.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
One of the best source of new clients, I would say, is not one but two things. If you are new to the market, LinkedIn is a great place to start because many businesses and clients are using the platform. If you can position yourself an expert and do cold outreach, you can find many people that may need your offer.
Second would be in-person networking events. There are so many benefits to attending networking events such as becoming a better communicator, getting comfortable with introducing yourself and practicing your sales pitch in a non-saley way. In addition, you are able to meet people from various industries that have other connections. You never know who knows who or who may need your offer. Aim to connect with one or two people and develop a good repertoire with them. Eventually, you will have a digital rolodex of people who can reach out to; its like having people in your back pocket. Also, you’d be surprised how wonderful people are and are willing to help you.
