We were lucky to catch up with Tristan Roberts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tristan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I actually had a conversation about this the other day when I was teaching a friend modern production techniques. There are multiple things that make me different from the industry standard, but here is the story. My friend asked me in regard to the small and subtle changes I make “well that’s just splitting hairs isn’t it?” my response being “Splitting hairs is what I do.” I take every detail to the fullest extent I can. I am here to make sure that my artist’s music is not only perfect in my eyes but perfect and true to their vision as well.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a producer and engineer first and foremost. I participate in every detail AFTER the song has been written and sometimes even participate in the writing of the music itself (the producer and writer in me). The first demo recording all the way through to mastering the project. I don’t prefer to do this with one song from beginning to end just because it is so much better to have multiple ears and people involved in projects, but the skills are there to do so. I had specialized in recording, for the most part, for the last 8-10 years but for the last 4 of that, I have been asking for more Mixing and Mastering work than anything. I enjoy it the most out of all of them because so many artists have poor mixing as their downfall or the reason that their songs aren’t at the level they want them to be.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. Most of the time I receive clients it is because of one of my other clients. Which is why it is so crucial that my clients want to work with me again and want their friends to also share that incredible experience. It means a great deal to me that I come so highly recommended to my clients. I hope to maintain that as the years go on and to bring the most value I can possibly bring.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Always taking every single project to its full potential and never cutting corners. I do my best and put my all into each and every artist and song that comes my way.
