Hi Tristan, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

In the ever-evolving realm of creative pursuits, embracing risk is akin to a high-stakes gamble, particularly for those venturing into careers in the film industry. My personal journey into the art world underscores the profound impact of taking chances and chasing one’s passion. My initial career started from the world of sketchbooks, clay, and stop motion. Fresh out of high school, I had a brief stint in the film industry, working on a commercial project at Warner Bros Interactive for an upcoming LEGO game that was being produced. It was a stepping stone that revealed the need for further skill development from a higher education than just youtube tutorials to thrive in the film and animation industry. However, in the USA, pursuing higher education often comes with a staggering price tag, with private college tuition averaging up to $55,000 USD per year, a daunting obstacle for many aspiring artists. And even with a diploma in hand, job security and substantial earnings are far from guaranteed for most in the industry.

The film industry’s most striking feature is its inherent instability. Projects can be greenlit and scrapped in the blink of an eye, leaving artists in a constant state of uncertainty. This volatility extends to employment, with gig-based work being the standard. While this format provides opportunities for diverse experiences, it also perpetuates financial instability, particularly for artists reliant on consistent income. The roller-coaster nature of the industry can exact an emotional toll, intensified by the high-stakes, pressure-cooker environment of film production. While it may appeal to young, adventurous souls fresh out of school, offering the allure of globetrotting and working worldwide as a digital nomad, it becomes increasingly challenging to maintain a stable life as one grows older. Furthermore, the film industry often demands intense collaboration, a double-edged sword that can either bolster or hinder an artist’s vision. Navigating this dynamic while preserving artistic integrity is a delicate balancing act. Add to that the challenge of working with visionless filmmakers and perpetual budget constraints, and the essence of the art form can get lost in the noise.

In contrast, pursuing a career in the arts as an independent, while not without its unique challenges, offers a more direct avenue for self-expression and control over one’s work. It grants artists the freedom to explore their creativity without the constraints and external pressures pervasive in the film industry. While the film world can indeed be gratifying and exhilarating with the glimmer Hollywood has over the world, its inherent instability and trials have prompted many artists, myself included, to take the leap of faith and independently pursue their artistic passions. However, independent work also comes with its substantial risks, as artists become self-producers, promoters, and even believers, necessitating a considerable amount of heavy lifting. Nonetheless, I’ve discovered that the art I create for myself consistently garners the most profound critical acclaim and provides personal fulfillment, reaffirming my belief in the essence of being an artist.

My decision to delve into the world of art has been profoundly transformative. The journey has not been devoid of its challenges, but the rewards have been immeasurable. Over the years, my work has been recognized and lauded by several prominent outlets, including MTV, USAToday, and Gizmodo, to name a few. This journey has breathed new life into my sense of purpose and fulfillment, as I continually uncover my role in the vibrant world of the arts. My story stands as a testament to the undeniable fact that taking risks in pursuit of one’s passion can lead to extraordinary and profoundly rewarding outcomes. It serves as a reminder that we must summon the courage to fearlessly chase our dreams, even when the path ahead seems shrouded in uncertainty, for life offers us but one precious opportunity to do so. Easier said than done, indeed, but undeniably worth every risk taken.

Sure, I am a filmmaker and previsualization artist based in Los Angeles. My journey into the world of visual storytelling began with a passion for art and an unwavering determination to turn my creative dreams into a reality from when I could barely hold a pen in my hand (which apparently was held wrong for over 20 years!).

I’ve always been fascinated by the magic of cinema and the power of storytelling through visuals. From cartoons like Samurai Jack and The Simpsons to movies like Star Wars, Scott Piligrim, and The Big Lebowski, I’ve always have found great pleasure and an escape in film and animation.

My career background spans over 8 years, immersing myself in various roles throughout the film industry, including television, commercials, game cinematics, and more. My journey has led me through studios such as Warner Bros Interactive, Digital Domain, Halon, MPC, and Reelfx Animation working with clients from Marvel, Disney and HBO to name a few. Among my notable roles, I served as the previs lead for HBO’s hit series, “The Last of Us.” Additionally, I was a layout lead for “Detective Pikachu.” and a Visualization Supervisor for “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with talented professionals from all over the world and contributing my expertise to bring stories to life on the big screen. My work as a previsualization artist allows me to bridge the gap between imagination and execution, helping filmmakers bring their visions to fruition. I’m passionate about the creative process and dedicated to pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling.

In addition to my film work, I also embrace my identity as an artist, continually exploring new avenues of creative expression. Whether it’s through painting, digital art, sculpture or other forms of visual storytelling, I find inspiration in the world around me and strive to bring my unique perspective to every project.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?

To start, investing in arts education is fundamentally paramount, particularly because it’s often overlooked in the broader education system. To nurture the next generation of artists and creatives, whether they are just beginning to explore their colors or diving into the intricacies of human anatomy, there should be more substantial funding and opportunities available. Encouraging students to explore their creativity, not only with traditional tools but also with the latest technology, can open new doors to artistic expression. Accessible tools and resources are essential cornerstones of a thriving creative ecosystem. Making everyday essentials like pens, paint, and clay, as well as advanced creative tools such as software, equipment, and training mentors, more affordable and readily available can be a game-changer. This inclusivity ensures that emerging artists, especially those venturing into these fields, have access to the resources they need to turn their creative visions into reality without the setback of the cost. Whether it’s a tablet for digital painting or specialized software for 3D modeling, removing financial barriers empowers artists to fully explore their potential.

Recognition from diverse cultures is another pivotal aspect. Encouraging the celebration of art from various cultural backgrounds not only enriches the creative landscape but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives. This recognition contributes to a more inclusive and globally connected creative community. Additionally, fostering and encouraging diversity within the creative community is essential. Embracing and championing artists from underrepresented backgrounds ensures that all voices and perspectives are represented. This diversity not only leads to more innovative and inclusive art but also encourages a broader range of narratives and experiences. Art is all about welcoming and embracing the beauties of the world, there should be no set narrative that overshadows others.

Furthermore, investing in the arts benefits society as a whole. Art has the power to inspire, provoke thought, and foster emotional connections. It has therapeutic value, enhancing mental well-being and serving as a means of expression for marginalized communities. The arts also drive economic growth, from supporting local artists to attracting cultural tourism and creating jobs in various creative sectors. Integrating the arts into everyday spaces such as public art initiatives, such as murals, sculptures, and interactive installations, beautify communities and bring art into the public sphere. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of urban environments but also provides opportunities for artists to share their work with a broader audience. I was fortunate enough back in 2021 to be a recipient of the City of West Hollywood’s Artist grant program to produce art that would attract new artists to the city, and contribute to improve the quality of daily life in the city. The result of this program has shown to be quite successful over the years making West Hollywood a vibrant community for up and coming artists.

So, how can society make these ideals a reality? It begins with recognizing the intrinsic value of art and creativity and allocating resources accordingly. This includes government support, corporate partnerships, and individual contributions. Prioritizing arts education in schools, promoting diversity and inclusion, and creating platforms for recognition and collaboration are essential steps. Society must also encourage public engagement with the arts, from attending exhibitions to participating in community art projects. Ultimately, fostering a thriving creative ecosystem is a collective effort that benefits everyone, enriching our culture, promoting innovation, and enhancing our quality of life.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.

One of the aspects that might prove challenging for individuals outside the creative sphere to grasp is the acceptance of uncertainty. Unlike many conventional careers characterized by well-defined milestones and structured paths, the creative process often resembles a labyrinth of unpredictability and ambiguity. For those accustomed to goal-oriented professions with predictable timelines, the inherent lack of a clear-cut route in the creative journey can be disconcerting. In the creative world, one might find themselves unsure of when their next job opportunity will arrive, leading to moments of uncontrollable employment fluctuations. Artists, sometimes overlooked in decision-making processes, can feel taken for granted, especially in an era when AI tools are on the rise, and their innovations are continually tested and refined.

Another intriguing concept that might bewilder non-creatives is the notion of failure as an invaluable learning tool. In creative domains, failure is not perceived as a dead-end but rather as a stepping stone towards improvement. Every creative endeavor represents a series of trials and errors, where what might initially appear as a setback is, in reality, a profound lesson. Additionally, comprehending the dual role of criticism in a creative’s life can be perplexing. Creatives regularly receive feedback and critique on their work, which can range from constructive to emotionally challenging. It’s important to understand that criticism is often intended to enhance and elevate their art, rather than being a personal attack. This nuanced perspective may require a degree of empathy and patience, especially when, for example, painstakingly crafted shots are unexpectedly edited out of a film, leading to countless hours of overtime and job insecurity.

Balancing passion and practicality is another precarious tightrope that creatives frequently navigate. Some may seek to exploit the passion of creatives for the sake of cost-effective labor, disregarding the value of their work in comparison to more traditional trades like plumbing or carpentry. The pursuit of a creative career can sometimes involve significant sacrifices and financial instability, all in the name of pursuing one’s artistic calling. To those who prioritize financial security above all else, this choice might seem perplexing.

The inherently subjective nature of art can challenge non-creatives’ understanding. Art’s impact varies greatly from person to person, and what resonates deeply with one individual may not have the same effect on another. Creatives often prioritize self-expression and the creation of meaningful work, even if it remains niche or commercially unrecognized. There’s the relentless pursuit of improvement. Creatives often serve as their own harshest critics, perpetually striving to refine their skills and push the boundaries of their craft.
