Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tristan Edwards. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tristan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The year 2020 was a very up and down year due to Covid. The job i was employed at shutdown several times that year because of how quickly Covid had spread. On top of that, it was a very intense, physically demanding and draining job. I remember having a dispute about my hourly pay and my employer wasn’t willing to give me what I deserved. August 8th 2020, I walked out on my job and didn’t turn back. It was a risk I was willing to take. My pride and dignity meant more to me than being a slave for an employer who could easily replace me. I spent the next couple of months figuring out what my next move would be, career wise. It wasn’t until December that I got the idea of becoming a business owner. I was already a business owner from being a DJ for 15 years, but I wanted to start another business as my main source of income. I started to watch Youtube videos for ideas and that’s when I finally stumbled across a guy who was a Mobile Detailer. The more videos I watched, the more it gained my interest. January of 2021, I bought a trailer, detail supplies and a water tank. I sent text messages to a lot of family and friends, in hopes that they would support me and my new business idea. January 15, 2021 is when I serviced my first 2 clients. I have officially been in business for 3 years now.
Tristan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born in the “Rose City” aka, Tyler, TX. I grew up in a small rural area called Chapel Hill, TX. I attended school in Tyler, but my family and church home were mainly in Chapel Hill. That’s where I spent my weekends and summers as a kid. I’m a proud member of St. Violet Baptist Church. I’m the oldest of my mothers 4 children. I myself, have 4 amazing children. Traneycia Edwards, Kristian Edwards, Mikalah Edwards and Khadyn Edwards. They have the keys to my heart. I attended John Tyler High which is also the alma mater of NFL legend, Earl Campbell. There are 4 main individuals who have guided me along my journey. I get my faith and wisdom from my late Grandmother, Violet Edwards. One of my favorite sayings from her is “God can write straight on a crooked line”. My Grandfather, O’Quince Edwards was a WWII veteran. He was a no nonsense hardworking man. He instilled in me the work ethic and discipline that I have today. Sacrifice and determination. 2 words that vividly describe my Mother, Cynthia Edwards. My Mom went without so we could have as children. Working sometimes 2 or even 3 jobs while putting her college career on the back burner. My Mom wasn’t a quitter though! She eventually went back and received her Associates, Bachelors and Masters degree and soon to be Doctoral degree. Resilient is what she is. The late Frank Williams was also a great mentor in my life. After my Grandfather passed away, he fulfilled that void of not having a Father figure around with advice and leadership while displaying what it took to be a man and take care of his family. Boss Hogg Mobile Detailing is a business I created from the ground up. I provide automotive car cleaning services in the greater Tyler, TX area. Some of my most popular services are interior detailing. I love transforming vehicles back to life. Sometimes that consists of breaking down the entire interior of a vehicle to shampoo carpets and seats. I got into this industry with the mindset of wanting to be my own boss. I wanted to be in control. I’m slowly building a legacy. I provide convenience for the average person or parent that stays on the go by going to their resident or place of employment to service their vehicle. What sets me apart is being professional while also treating my clients like family. The Boss Hogg Brand is a family. I’ve also been a DJ for nearly 20 years. I have served the Tyler/Dallas area over the years with private parties, proms, weddings and corporate events. With nearly 15k followers on social media, I started my very own music show in 2017 called “The DJTrill Quiet Storm” It consists of playing R&B from the 90’s, which I consider the “Golden Era” of music in general. DJTrill is a household name and brand now. I’ve reached audiences in California, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, New York, Chicago, Alabama, Kansas City, Michigan, The UK, and Africa just to name a few. I was inspired by the Late DJ Screw and Michael “5000” Watts out of Houston, TX. As of 2024, I have a large body of work that I am proud of as a Detailer and DJ.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Social media played a huge part in gaining my clientele. Clients also share my contact information with the family and co-workers and that has proven to be as effective as social media.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My website has been the best source for new clients as of recent. When potential clients are searching for service, they can google “mobile detailers” and my business shows in the search results. This option has lead to a lot of traffic directly to my website.
