We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trisha Gianesin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Trisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I’ve always embraced the idea that the possibility of hearing “no” can lead to many more “yeses.” This mindset guided me when I decided to take a significant risk by reaching out to cinematographer Brady Bassette—someone whose work has profoundly inspired me, to see if he would consider coming on as the Cinematographer for an upcoming project, The Travelers Team.
Initially, self-doubt held me back. I feared that my inexperience would lead him to dismiss my email. For days, I wrestled with this mental tug-of-war, One part of me insisting that sending it was a foolish notion, while the other part whispered, “But what if it’s not?” Finally, after days of hesitation, I made the decision to hit send.
The moment I took that risk, everything changed. While I didn’t get the chance to work with Brady directly, he responded positively and connected me with Kevin Otterness, who loved my script. This connection eventually led to producer John David Wolfe sharing my project with production manager Chloe Koegel, who joined our team.
This experience has been a powerful reminder of the rewards that come from stepping outside of my comfort zone. By choosing to embrace risk, I opened doors to remarkable opportunities and formed an incredible team dedicated to bringing The Travelers Team to life. I am grateful that I didn’t let fear hold me back, as the rewards of this journey have been truly transformative.
Trisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
This is always the hardest part of anything I do…The talking about me part! Well, I’m Trisha Gianesin, A wife, mother, Business owner, and new creative filmmaker!
How did I get here, that would probably require a “how I met your Mother” length answer but, I will try to give you a birds eye view instead. I actually have never been what you would call “creative”. I live in a family full of creatives, photographers, artists, writers, but I instead chose to make my career in HR, and not just any HR function, Compliance – where I would quite literally sometimes have to fight over the word is. All of that changed when I was diagnosed with Lupus (SLE & Lupus Nephritis) and it began destroying not only one of my kidneys, but also my memory, my ability to use words (lupus fog they call it), and could no longer work in the profession I had loved for almost 2 decades.
Fast forward 5 years; the Lupus fog had gotten so severe, I thought I may be showing signs of early onset Alzheimer’s. Luckily, that was not the case, and my doctor at the time offered up a “Brain Game” to help train my brain to work in ways it had not before, with the goal of improved memory, word association, etc. The challenge was – learn something so opposite of anything I have ever done – learn something I hate, or just something that doesn’t come natural, that my brain would never have come across before.
That takes us to the beginning of 6MP Films. I absolutely love Science fiction as a whole, but I have a special love for those time travel/change the future science fiction projects. It always ends in me wondering for several days (after the plan inevitably fails for one reason or another) – What if…What if this was different or that was different, would it work then, could you make that better future? I always told people “If I was creative I would try to make a sci-fi film”, so I knew that day, that was the end goal, but how to get there would be the fun part.
I was going to teach myself everything there was to know about filmmaking, then I was going to go out and make one…well a short sci-fi film at least, Just like so many times, life had other plans, and while I did make a short film, it wasn’t a sci-fi, it was a dark comedy instead…and I loved every second of it! That experience was amazing, and I wanted to keep going for the next 20 years, and unlike HR, I could do this with Lupus! Since that short film, #6, was shot, I have completed another short, developed and produced a web-talk series (completed it’s 1st season), where independent creatives from all areas of art can come share their experiences, educate others, and of course promote themselves and their projects. (this is, so far, the work I am most proud of from a human standpoint), and am currently working on our first feature – a sci-fi thriller titled The Travelers Team, and will be shooting it with an amazing cast and crew in early 2025.
What I would like fans/followers.ect. to know – Picture this: you’re sitting in the theater, completely immersed in the story unfolding on the screen. You’re laughing, you’re on the edge of your seat, you’re completely captivated. Then, the credits roll, and you head home, maybe even rehashing the day in your head as you brush your teeth later that night, and then, it hits you. A question, a lingering thought, a new perspective on the characters and the story you just experienced. That’s the kind of experience I am aiming to create with every project. Weaving thought-provoking questions into the fabric of the narratives, but never at the expense of pure entertainment. I want people to be swept away by the story, to be entertained, to feel the adrenaline rush, and then, as a bonus layer, to walk away with a sense of intrigue, a lingering question that makes you think about the world and the characters in a new light. Stories have the power to challenge your assumptions, to make us think, to leave us pondering long after the credits roll, and that is what I (we all at 6MP) hope to offer our audience.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Okay, so you want the real deal, huh? No sugarcoating? Well, honestly, the mission and goal is all about giving audiences what they’ve been craving —If they are like me— stories that actually *work*. You know, the kind with characters you can relate to, no matter your background, or theirs, and plots that don’t leave you scratching your head. We’re talking about stories that shine so bright, they bring people together, not just for a couple of hours, but for the long haul.
And how do we do that? By putting characters in service of the story, not the other way around. It’s about finding the heart of the story and letting it guide the way, not forcing a narrative to fit a certain mold. And that’s where the magic happens—we are working to achieve that goal by bringing together crew and cast who are just as passionate about the story as we are. We mix seasoned veterans with fresh faces, creating a dynamic that sparks something truly unique… People, all working together to create something special.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Absolutely 100% it is the people – the community who support uplift and truly promote each other! I was raised in a time when the adage “It takes a village” was adhered to, for better or worse, there was a sense of community where someone would always know the answer (and would give it to you whether you asked or not – in the most loving and uplifting way). Those not within this world, who like me before I started, only here the stories of the bad apples out for themselves, would be, as I was, utterly amazed at how absolutely wrong they are!
