We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trisha Duvivier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Trisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Everyone has crazy stuff happen to them, but often small business owners and creatives, artists and others who are doing something off the beaten path are hit with things (positive or negative) that are so out there, so unpredictable and unexpected. Can you share a crazy story from your journey?
My former business partner, emailed me while I was in Spain to tell me she was quitting Workhero….1 week before we were scheduled to pitch to a company together. She’d only been working with me for a few months and She didn’t even give me notice! It was so scary and shocking because I didn’t believe that I could go it alone and felt powerless as I read her email. Looking back, I should have never felt powerless and believed in myself way more. I learned the hard way.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
WORKHERO provides HR consulting services in a way the bridges the gap between HR, employees, and leadership. Specifically, we help everyone out of the trenches that make them miserable at work. We’ve identified 3 trenches that seem to exist no matter who you are: Mental Health, Organizational Design, and Workplace Violence. We work to pull employees out of these trenches and keep them out…effectively stopping people from hating work so much and feeling like they’re entering a war zone everyday.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“Think Again The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know “ by Adam Grant is a book I’m currently reading and I absolute love it. It not only impacts my entrepreneurial philosophy but my everyday life because there is so much power in approaching life and situations from a place of understanding that I know a lot, but probably not as much as I think I do. That empowers me to always self reflect, ask questions and listen.
“Range: Why Generalists triumph in a specialized world” is also a favorite of mine and so inspiring. It’s ok to explore different areas, and learn as you go! That’s what I’ve done with Workhero. HR isn’t my area of expertise or academic specialty. The company reflects my range, and that of the team as well. One of my favorite quotes from the book is” Work forward from promising situations…this is what most successful people actually do anyway.” I did that when dreaming up Workhero, and I do that now with its day to day operations and our long term goals.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Workhero launched in January 2020…right before Covid. It wasn’t the greatest timing but we maximized our time developing the programs. Throughout the years, our team has endured a lot. My Mom died at the end of 2020 and she was my rock, best friend, and of course, supporter of any endeavor I undertook. I considered dropping Workhero many times after that, but something inside me told me to press on. It was extremely difficult…but my husband and my business partners lifted me up and we all pressed on.
