Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trisha Dash. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Trisha, thanks for joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I’m constantly investing in tools to make my job easier as a photographer and business owner. I can’t live without my Honey Book, Wacom Tablet, Loupe Deck, iMac & iPad, and Milanote. The absolute best investment I made as a photographer was art school. When I decided to commit to being a professional photographer, I knew that YouTube videos could only get me so far with my photography so I enrolled in the Art Institute of Austin Texas and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The school gave me a lot of connections, networking opportunities, and more importantly, the best mentors I could ask for – professors who were also active professionals in the business. I learned current industry standards and how to make a profit selling my art. After graduation, they were always willing to answer any questions I had about the business of photography and they even referred clients to me!
Trisha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an internationally published, award-winning photographer known as Trisha Dash. My work has been featured in numerous fashion publications including several volumes of Vogue Italiana. I give every project my all, the signature “Trisha Dash Experience” which consists of in-depth planning, creative direction, and high energy on set! My proudest moments are when I get to showcase people of color and bring diversity to some of the most influential platforms on the planet.
I got into photography at a very young age. My father passed down his passion to me and thanks to him, I had a camera in my hand as far back as I can remember. Eventually, I realized that photography was a great outlet that I could use to express my creativity. It was those early memories with my father that inspired me to become a professional photographer. I broke into the industry immediately after graduating from the Art Institute; I started working with well-known artists in the industry. My collaborations with these designers, models, and creatives lead to my rising notoriety.
What sets me apart is my unique skill set in advanced lighting and my technical knowledge of photography. People choose Trisha Dash for the emotion I deliver with the use of color, lighting, and perspective with each click of my camera. After every shoot, high-end commercial retouching with keen attention to detail is one of the most crucial elements to a stunning photograph. High-caliber, industry-standard retouching is a hallmark of the Trisha Dash Experience!
My passion is creating art that tells a story and I truly get excited about making people look stunning! As a commercial photographer, I serve creatives, brands, and entrepreneurs who want to elevate and grow their audience. This includes many services from e-commerce images and personal branding photos to portfolio update sessions and even developing tailored on-brand imagery solutions.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Starting out, I would accept any and every gig that came my way (mostly portraits). I had great pictures and I had recognizable talent, but I had no specific audience to market my services to. I had no focus and that was a hamper on my clientele base. I still enjoy taking on creative challenges today but there was a point I decided to focus on commercial photography as a niche –which definitively elevated my clientele.
Paying my dues as a business owner myself, and having a product that I wanted to sell, I began to understand on a deeper level what businesses need from a photographer. My strategy was to focus on mastering commercial photography and market to the needs of businesses. As I did, people began to equate Trisha Dash with expertise in fashion, product, and branding photography. Choosing to focus on commercial photography has not only been the most effective strategy for elevating my clientele, but it also gave me the force I needed to truly master my craft.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
The majority of my new business comes from word of mouth and 100% of my clients always return for more photography. I attribute my brand loyalty to the Trisha Dash Experience; the professional experience I provide on set, maintaining the highest caliber quality of work, and going above and beyond to bring the vision to life for clients! As a commercial photographer, I’m always growing and it is important to make sure my clients grow with me. I send weekly emails about current deals, new services, and business updates. I even celebrate milestones with my clients. For instance, when I get a new camera and gear —so do they! Every new client is an addition to the Trisha Dash Family and the best way to stay in touch with family is to correspond and talk often!
