Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trish Lindo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Trish, thanks for joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I landed my first client for my company through the power of community. Previously, I worked at LinkedIn as a Senior Community Manager. Though I was laid off I had several people messaging me to inquire about how to build their personal brand on LinkedIn. I realized there was opportunity there. My first client knew of my work at LinkedIn and she had spoken to a few other creatives on LinkedIn about me. She was eager to work with me even though I didn’t have my business completely set up at the time. She took a chance on me and was absolutely thrilled with the personal brand results and strategy I provided for her. I will forever be grateful for her giving me an opportunity during a time I didn’t even know if I was ready.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a personal branding architect and LinkedIn Strategist that works with organizations and their members to build a viable online presence starting with LinkedIn. I worked for many years in media including CNN, Yahoo!, OWN, and E! to name a few. I pivoted into tech working as a senior manager at BuzzFeed/Tasty and most recently LinkedIn. I consider myself a storyteller. My biggest opportunity is teaching people how to tell their own stories in a way that highlights their background and the direction they want to take their careers and brand. It’s not easy because none of us are a monolith. It’s all about sharing the parts of our professional and personal experience to create a cohesive narrative that aligns with their goals.
When clients come to me, they’re trying to make sense of all their professional and lived experience. Many are looking to pivot their career, launch their new book, land more speaking opportunities, or even become a board member. Everyone has a different objective but it’s all the same, how do I tell my story in a way that can set they up for more success. I think what sets me apart is my ability to empathize with my clients and to listen to what they will ultimately like to achieve. My media background is huge asset in I can share the best way to amplify your voice so that it captures the right attention especially online and print. I offer two long workshops that include three follow up sessions with me and in person and virtual speaking engagements for various organizations around the country.
I am the executive producer and host of Too AMBITIOUS, a weekly Live series on LinkedIn and YouTube that celebrates Black women and women of color founders who are innovators, disruptors, and yes very Ambitious.
I am an advocate for entrepreneurs and small business owners who are seeking to build meaningful communities in person that that can help to further scale their businesses. As a content creator, community manager, moderator, and on-camera host I’ve facilitated workshops and been a panelist for these organizations including EY’s Growth Strategic Forum, Digital Undivided, ColorComm, Lesbians Who Tech, LinkedIn InFused, and Penguin Random House to name a few.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to learn is to believe in my own greatness. I spent many years in corporate being told I’m not good enough to land a promotion. My experience has been questioned even though I have the credentials to back it up. It took a toll on my self esteem and how I saw myself. I started reading books by Eckhart Tolle and Don Miguel Ruiz to change my mindset and belief system. I also do positive affirmations daily to continue my personal development. It’s not easy at first because you have to undo years of negative thinking, but having a daily practice of affirmations and meditation along with good friends and family it really helps.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy to growing my business is posting consistently on LinkedIn. I share tips and perspectives for building a personal brand leveraging LinkedIn. Potential clients DM me to inquire about my services. The other thing is referrals. I would say 80 percent of my business is from people referring me because they’ve had an invaluable experience working with me. I am tremendously grateful for that.
