We were lucky to catch up with Trish Kennedy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Trish, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I feel like I’ve always known this about myself to be honest, ever since I was a kid I’ve always had an interest in art and creativity as a whole. From drawing, to music, to dance, I was interested in it all and learnt all of it, from a very young age so I always knew I would end up in this space somehow, I just wasn’t sure what exact field I’d be in. As I got older I decided that fashion would be my main focus because my style was something I was already known for and in some ways it came the most naturally to me, so I decided it was about time to start taking fashion more seriously.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Trish Kennedy, I am a Nigerian creative living in Houston, Texas and I am 25 years old. I’d like to think of myself as an all round creative because I always say what I do depends on the day of the week and the hat I’m wearing that day. My focus is mainly in the fashion aspect of creativity, Im a Designer, stylist and model primarily but I do quite a few other things within the industry as well. I started off as a Dj in about 2016, this was my first passion turned business, I modeled and designed clothes on the side during this time but I was also in school so it was quite a task juggling all that. However, I did so for a few years in Houston and in Nigeria, after a while, I decided to shift my focus to predominantly design, styling & production. I just naturally began to lean more towards the fashion and behind the scenes aspect of creativity, and that is what I do now. I am a Designer and stylist, I have a clothing brand called Asylm Threads, I model and creative direct shoots for myself and other people, I also dabble in photography and set production as well, and I still make playlists and mixes from time to time; I’ll probably get back to DJing properly again at some point in the future lol. I think my knowledge in so many aspects of creativity is what sets me apart from others, I really have the ability, skill and technique to understand and execute a vision accurately and that is such an honor to be able bring peoples visions to life, as well as my own. I think one the most gratifying thing about being a creative is seeing that you can actually accomplish your goals and ideas, and just growing though the learning process of trial end error until you get that you want, it’s a journey of chaotic bliss.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Honestly, I think the most rewarding aspect for me is really conceptualizing an idea and being able to bring it to life and then seeing how your work impacts other people. The process of having an idea and then planning the execution and actually going through with it, to eventually come out with an end result that you are proud of. That feeling alone is so satisfying and rewarding, and then to put it out into the world and see people react and relate to it; positively or negatively, is just so encouraging and it really helps my self belief, and pushes me to create in some way everyday.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I kind of feel like my driving force is my ability to create in itself. I definitely have goals and things I’d like to accomplish within different spaces in the creative world and just in life generally, like; showcase my collections at Fashion week, style for top clients and photoshoots, travel the world and so much more. I think most people have goals and ambitions set up like that which motivate them to keep striving typically. However, as much as those things motivate me as well, I think my biggest motivator is just the fact that I have to ability to create and do multiple things, so I feel like that awareness gives me motivation enough to just create and push myself to see what else I can come up with. It’s like I feel this responsibility to myself and to God to not waste any of my talents, but to hone in on them and constantly surprise myself.
