We recently connected with Trinity Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Trinity , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
The idea came into place as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I graduated in 2021 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication. As a member of the Omicron Beta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., a few tasks that I had involved making flyers for our social and civic events.
I then landed a job at the University of Chicago as a Communications and Events Specialist, and would manage social media content and event promotion. This would encourage me to learn more about Canva and Adobe creative tools.
I was encouraged by a former manager to take classes and become more involved with Graphic Design; I realized I was becoming more interested in it.
I decided to establish my design company on January 9th of 2023; which now we are two! In addition to producing quality marketing materials for my clients, my goal is to provide newsworthy content as a published Journalist. My writing can be found in publications like The Chicago Reader and HerAgenda.
Trinity , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Trinity Jackson, the CEO of By Faith Imagery. A Graphic Design company Formerly named “BossBby Graphics,” and “Queen’s Marketing.”
I started my business with the intention of providing quality marketing materials for small businesses. Additionally, my goal is to provide newsworthy content as a published Journalist.
Some of the issues that prevented me from starting sooner was my state of mind. I didn’t like the environment I was in with a previous employer, and eventually I was out of work for 6 months. I’d learned a lot during that time. Firstly, I was drinking way too much for a broke person on the verge of eviction. Secondly, I realized I was the friend that people called to party. My phone stopped ringing when I expressed my financial situation, and that I couldn’t party anymore.
I realized being drunk and hungover every weekend would put off the launch of my business simply because I couldn’t get out of bed.
Design and writing would eventually become my escape from depression. Daily I had thoughts of suicide, which was a result of my financial issues. My closest friends, including Tyressia Broomes who introduced me to Canvas Rebel, encouraged me to keep going.
Because of their support, I was able to land celebrity, and/or widely known clients such as Dyme Galore and Hair Physician.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I had to pivot twice now. I found myself becoming less motivated and more frustrated with the “slow season.” A time where businesses aren’t running sales, and may not be in need of marketing materials.
This caused me to rebrand twice, which is reason for the change in our brand name. Our name is now “By Faith Imagery,” a reflection of the center of our brand – God. I would even say I’m the co-founder as God is the original founder of my passion, and placed the desire to design on my heart.
Experiencing financial hardship, unemployment, depression, and even heartbreak lead me to finding myself again – with the help of God. I owe God all of the credit for my resilience and for the success of my company.
Ultimately, I had a pivot in my career and in my faith.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Owning a business is tough. After landing well-known clients, I thought future clients would be rolling in. When I realized they weren’t, and I had landed myself right into a slow season, I became resentful almost. Resulting in producing meaningless and pointless content.
After centering God in my business, I was able to unlearn such a greedy mindset that once caused me to lose my passion for designing.
Since then, I’ve been able to find my passion and patience within owning my business. It gets rough sometimes, still. I just continue to pray and ask for endurance.
