We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trini Viv a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Trini, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My journey of music production started with teaching myself through resources like YouTube, using bits of knowledge and techniques to experiment with sounds. At this time, the only instruments I was familiar with was the steel drum and piano. I played the steel drum in elementary school while I lived Trinidad, and became fond of the piano when I moved to the states. Luckily, my beginner piano skills allowed me to navigate my MIDI keyboard pretty well, and although my production process was slow at first, the fundamental knowledge I had from my early years were able to translate and be built upon from there. Knowing what I know now, I can say the best way I could’ve sped up the learning process was to be consistent with the intent to learn. It’s like the difference between using the Internet to find all of your homework answers and using notes you previously took to understand the new content. Retaining and applying what you learn becomes second nature when you simply intend it to be. The skills I think were most essential for my growth were patience, adaptability, and decisiveness. Obstacles like writer’s block, social anxiety, and overall lack of confidence became more and more relieved as I adapted to the people around me and took greater control over the decisions I made.
Trini, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I like to consider myself a record producer first. My passion is creating melodies/ beats because this form of art evokes feelings that I will always appreciate and love. People should come to me if they are looking for a refreshing experience of synthetic, heavy-hitting grooves. The style might remind you of disco, funk, or reggae with a modern touch of hip-hop that blends in crazy ways. When you work with me, you invest your time into something bigger than both of us. My mission goes far beyond creating a hit track. What drives my passion and creativity is learning from different types of people, styles, techniques, etc. and channeling my own understanding to evolve both musically and mentally. Hit tracks will be merely a consequence of dedication and growth as I pursue music.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We’re at the point in this life where the Internet basically knows all of us whether we like it or not. So, the best way to engage people on social media, in my opinion, is to be yourself unapologetically (cliché, I know). Don’t be hesitant to show love, especially when someone shows you love and you have the chance to return the favor. Transparency is also a big theme with social media presence. Letting people in on small details, routines, or activities in your life can be catalysts for people to relate to you and spark something to talk about. The seemingly small interactions can add up, and having a large network of symbiotic relationships is beyond valuable in the long run.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is creating something that I love and being able to share it with the chance to impact people. For me, it’s not necessarily about being recognized for the artistry. Translating creative ideas from my head into the physical world is what keeps me sane.
