We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trini LaShawn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Trini, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
For many years, I struggled with memories of painful experiences from my childhood. My parents separated when I was 9 and divorced soon after. It took me years to forgive my parents, but on my journey of letting go of the past, my focus has shifted from the pain I felt for so long, to the many blessings and lessons I’ve learned from them. For example, my father was a black man, born in the south in 1929. Despite the hardship of growing up in a racially segregated community, he accomplished his dream of graduating from college and having a successful career as a lawyer. My mother was the first black secretary to integrate a rehabilitation center where she worked in Virginia. My experiences as a creative artist and small business owner have helped me truly appreciate their courage. My own struggles as an adult, wife, mother and creator have helped me to understand who they were and to have empathy for them, instead of anger. Their legacy inspires me every time I create or have an opportunity to help someone during an intuitive reading or service. I’m grateful to realize the gifts my parents gave me that I didn’t see or consider when I was younger, and prior to stepping into my creative space as an artist and intuitive.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I spent 17 years as a Spanish and ESL teacher, and although I walked away from my career, in a way I’ll always be a teacher. I made a change in 2020, deciding to teach, share and support others through my intuitive gifts as a tarot reader and sound healer. In April of last year, I began creating and sharing energy healing sessions through ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) videos on YouTube, in addition to my videos related to spiritual healing and tarot. I’m so glad I chose to share my energy with the ASMR community, because it gives me a way to provide my subscribers with relief from anxiety, depression and insomnia. I love to create beautiful art with my videos, but my main goal is to channel divine energy to heal and empower others. I struggled with anxiety and depression for more than 20 years (since childhood), so whenever a subscriber lets me know that I helped them, I feel so honored and happy to know that I’ve used my gifts and the lessons I’ve learned to make a positive change in their life. I also provide intuitive healing services, such as tarot readings and energy healing sessions. I love having the opportunity to connect with my clients, whether it’s by creating a personalized ASMR session, blending a custom healing ritual oil, or providing clarity and insight during a spiritual consultation or intuitive tarot reading. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to do what I love each day – to create, support, connect and heal.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Over the past 3 years, I’ve learned to make my own rules – to do what works best for me. I’m an introvert and my creative energy thrives when I’m alone or with my family. In the beginning, I often ignored my need to rest and be alone, and I put an immense amount of pressure on myself, attempting to follow the recommendations of social media experts to keep up with a very fixed posting schedule. I work best when I’m inspired, not when I force myself to “keep up” with a set posting schedule. I experience more success and contentment now that I listen to myself and do what feels right for me, not following any set of rules or recommendations. I’m dedicated to going with my natural flow, listening to my body and letting my intuition guide me, not only for how I create, but also for how I share my content.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s incredibly rewarding to know that I’m putting my creations “out there” for others to enjoy. One reason why I left my career in education, is because I spent more time analyzing data and test scores, than doing what I actually loved – interacting in a fun and meaningful way with my students. My life has changed so much since I began my healing practice, In Her Dreams. What I see in my mind, I’m able to create and share with the world. I’m honored to do this as I continue my father’s legacy of making his dreams a reality, and my mother’s legacy of sharing her beautiful energy with everyone around her.
