We were lucky to catch up with Trey Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Trey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I started my own business just months after starting a new job. Weird, right?
I moved away from corporate medicine to work for a startup. I missed, MISSED my relationships with families deeply. What did I miss? The common questions, the expectant questions about what their child was going to start doing, and most of the anticipatory guidance on things the parents hadn’t even thought about. Oh boy, that was my jam. And I didn’t have it.
So I started a side gig while working at a startup. A side gig more serving as an on-call doc for some of my old patients who desperately wanted my advice. These parents would seek out care with me via any methods necessary- instagram messaging, LinkedIn in-mail, Facebook… and some found my personal email and reached out. After joking with a few of these moms, I knew there was an untapped market. But boy, there are a a lot of challenges when you’re opening a multi-state mostly virtual practice. A lot.
Fast forward 6 months later and I decided to take it full time. The jump has been fraught with fear, anxiety, excitement, and a lot of other emotions. Above all, it’s been rewarding. Rewarding as hell. Growth comes with its own challenges, and every business experiences this. What advice I’d give is to be prepared for the amount of investment it takes in the growth phase (not the scaling phase when you’ve hit success) to be more than what you think.

Trey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a former Air Force pediatrician who’s trying to change the name of the game when it comes to your children’s healthcare.
You know it–going to the pediatrician nowadays is more like a DMV experience. Booking weeks ahead, long waits, forms to fill out… the only thing they don’t do is give you a number. It’s appalling and 100% reactive care. Plus, you have to deal with nurse triage which is going to send you to an urgent care or emergency room 9/10 when it often isn’t necessary. WHAT?
There are AMAZING pediatricians out there who just aren’t given the time to spend with you to dive down deep into the root of your child’s problem. We solve that problem by giving you direct access pediatrics.
At Peds MD, we do things differently. You have DIRECT access to your pediatrician 24/7 so you no longer have to guess at what level of care is needed. You also get unlimited virtual visits, as well as many other benefits like a telehealth kit and no-rushed appointments. We even go so far as to offer old school house calls. YES- we come to you. How much more convenient can you get?
I have time with my families to go deeper into issues answering the “why” as opposed to scratching surface deep. Instead of a transactional relationship, I work with my families in a true partnership in their child’s care.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being personable. Connecting with your clients, learning about them and bringing more of a personal vibe pays dividends. AI can only do so much of this, and more and more people are leaning more towards this type of personalization. So customer service is absolutely key if you’re offering a premium product.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media. We’ve invested heavily in social media and most recently in social media management to help us build a steady flow into our lead pipeline. This has what has helped us grow by 6x in 5 months, almost exclusively. Investing in social media (depending on the niche and market) can almost exclusively push your business towards long term profitability.
