We were lucky to catch up with Trey Kauffman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Trey, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When I first began my entrepreneurial journey, I was lost. I didn’t have any idea what I was doing and that became abundantly clear after I took on two partners only months into quitting my job and going full-time with my venture.
My partnership went south quickly and I ended up losing the name of the company I’d long loved. I remember the sinking feeling of despair as I walked around my neighborhood contemplating what I was going to do with my life and how I was going to make money. Less than a year into self-employment and I was already a failure.
It was during that long, lonely walk that I realized what was truly important to me. I had been devaluing my time on a massive scale. I loved working for myself, yes, but what I loved more was having the freedom and flexibility to do the things I truly love. Running, mountain biking, rock climbing, and being outside were what fed me, and there was no way I was going to give that up.
Mosaic Life was born out of the desire to live my very best life, no compromises, no apologies, all while doing great work for clients with whom I chose to work. Spreading that message has been a source of joy for more than five years now, and I couldn’t be happier.

Mosaic Life Creative is a full service web design, maintenance, and hosting company. I offer website solutions for my clients that take the burden of wondering if and how their website works off of their plate. When someone chooses to work with me, they know their online presence is taken care of.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
After my failed business partnership, I promised myself two things. The first, I would never devalue my time again. The second was that I never wanted to be responsible for someone else’s happiness, which means I never wanted to take on employees or new partners.
That meant I was presented with unique challenges and opportunities as a solopreneur. I knew my happiness and well-being were my number one priorities. That meant I had to enjoy my work.
Instead of taking on any client who would have me, which is tempting for a lot of business owners out of the gate, I was able to choose with whom I worked. I was given the chance to make sure our values align, and that’s one lesson I can’t put a price on.
From a technical standpoint, in an industry that’s ever-changing, I was gifted with the chance to always be expanding my knowledge. Suddenly, learning was fun again, and I didn’t have to feel bad about taking time to work on myself.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Somehow, I’m still not quite sure I can put it into words, I’ve become a 100% referral based business. I do great work for my clients and they refer more business my way.
Working for myself, the business I’ve built over the years has become more than enough to sustain my lifestyle, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.
