We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trevor Velasco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Trevor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My family and I have always been a big traveling/adventurous family, going all over and never scared to go somewhere new or not “popular’. With all of the travels and adventures I felt the need to capture moments that just cant be explained other than looking at a photo. I learned Photography from a lot of trial and error through the years of doing it as a hobby.
Lighting. Lighting is immensely important in photos. I was super naive when I first started and thought you could just pick up a camera and click the shutter button and you have a wonderful picture. That was not the case, lighting is by far the most important thing when doing photography, understanding it will make a world of difference in your photos.
I am not sure if you all would consider patience to be a skill, but I think having patience is one of the most essential parts of doing photography. From being patient to find the right angle, lighting, subject, etc. to the editing process where one photo may take 5 minutes to edit vs a couple of days. I believe patience is key while doing photography, you never want to feel rushed or push out products that are rushed.
There were many obstacles that stood in the way from learning more when I first started out. School, work, life are a few to name. There was always something in the way that took time away from learning and taking photography seriously.
Trevor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Trevor Velasco, a photographer from West Texas. I started doing photography back in 2015 as a hobby. I have always been an adventure seeker and wanted a way to capture the epic places I would go to. I soon began to fall in love with photography and the beauty behind every picture. The photography that I do is a mix between Wildlife, landscape and candid photos. I have recently gotten into some product photography for brands in the outdoor/camping scene which has been super fun and a learning experience. My style of photography is a very moody type so I feel like it tells a great story when you look at it, it almost transports you to the picture itself. I am most proud at how far I have come with this journey, I never thought a kid in high school that just picked up a GoPro and camera for fun has now turned into something I am so passionate about and given me some amazing experiences and opportunities.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There are two, telling a story and seeing how happy photos can make a person.
Behind every photo there is a story either the adventure you took to get to the spot where the photo was taken or the photo itself. The great part is your imagination will make up countless stories of what happened or could have happened, thats the beautiful thing about photography, everyone sees things in a different perspective. I could look at a photo and see something completely different than you can and thats what I find so fascinating.
Making people smile has got to be one of the best feelings in the world to me. Nothing tops sending off some photos to clients and getting a response of how much the photos mean to them and the smile it puts on their face. It is just a surreal feeling for me and means so much to me. It is the fuel that keeps the fire lit.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Theres multiple goals/missions that are driving me. One, would be to make this my full time job. I am completely happy right now but it would be awesome to be able to travel and capture content full time, but until then the weekend warrior will be my best friend until the opportunity comes.
Another driver would be the happiness and story telling I hope to provide through my photos, I love when someone can look at my photos and get inspired to either go out and adventure or just get a sense of ease while looking at my content. Nothing better than inspiring someone to go out and live life.
