We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Trevor Pleasant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Trevor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Over the course of your career, have you seen or experienced your field completely flip-flop or change course on something?
I’ve been blessed to have two professions as a medical professional for Davita dialysis and also as a musician. I will talk about a U-Turn musically and medically.I actually went almost 10 years without touching an instrument or writing any lyrics. Music was a thing of the past for me as I concentrated 100% on my medical job. Spring of 2020 a lot happened during this time personally, musically, and medically. I remember covid 19 coming to existence. Medically everything changed. Wearing mask 10 to 12 hours a day. Patients with compromised immune systems wearing mask. We totally changed our protocols on how we did medical screening due to COVID. Which is a standard that is used today. During this same time in 2020 my best friend was on the verge of dying. It was a u turn in my life personally and musically. He went hospice. I Went to visit him at the hospice house. He told me that I should get back into making music. Sometimes he was honest to a fault but one thing about him is that when he said something i listened. The fuel and inspiration I needed to get back into music. Unfortunately he didn’t get to see the music thing take off for me because he passed away 2 months after our conversation. U turns in life come with a lot of curveballs, uncertainty, sometimes hurt and pain but there’s a silver lining and a root cause for everything. U turns can steer you in the right direction and be inspiring…

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Trevor Pleasant from Topeka Kansas and I’m a musician and Medical Professional for Davita dialysis. Most people call me by my stage mane Trevor P. I’m actually a self taught musician. Started writing music when I was 12. Started rapping when I was 14, learned piano and keys at 17. In my mid 20s I gave up music for 10 years but only recently I got back into music. I’m a rapper, singer-songwriter, producer and Multi-instrumentalist. So for my medical job, I have worked at Davita dialysis for 10 years. Providing life saving dialysis treatment for patients who have end stage kidney failure. Dialysis is recommended for patients who have a kidney function below 15 percent. It’s really life changing for our patients. I keep it honest with them at this point. Dialysis or die. The only in between is if my patients get a kidney transplant. It takes a special type of person to work in this field. A great connection with my patients.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Honestly this is a great question. I always wanted to be a history teacher. I love American history and world geography. I think about it from time to time. I also know that I’m doing what I’m suppose to be doing in life. Music and saving lives..

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
For me musically it comes from real life experiences and just being able to stay inspired and creative. Medically having compassion and empathy will take you along way. Providing the best possible care and going above and beyond for the ones you care for.
