We recently connected with Trevor Joseph and have shared our conversation below.
Trevor, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I started making music over 17 years ago however, it wasn’t until about 5 years ago when I truly decided to begin making it a career for myself. When I look back, there are times when I think to myself, I should be a lot farther than I am today. Although, I’ve come a long way, that type of thinking motivates me to move forward. When I feel like I’m behind, there ain’t no time to waste by staying still, I have to take the next step without hesitation. I’m proud of where I am, and I’m proud I’m still going. I’ve seen a lot of people give up, but just because it doesn’t happen all at once doesn’t mean it’s not happening. I like my journey, and I like my story. I think if I would’ve reached higher levels of success sooner than now, I might’ve not been mentally prepared for it. The timing I started, and where I am now gives me perspective to survive through the highs and the lows as they come and go. That being said; no, I don’t wish I would’ve started sooner, or later. I think my timing is perfect.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Trevor Joseph, I’m a rapper/musician in Orlando, Florida. When I was 11 years old I started writing poems which helped me express what I felt, and organize my thoughts. After a few years, I started performing my poems over hip-hop instrumentals, which is where I begin learning how to rap. Today I’ve independently released multiple projects including my debut studio album where I single-handedly created everything from the ground up. I make all of my beats from scratch, I write all of my songs on my own, I record, mix, and master all of my tracks, I shoot all of my pictures and music videos, I designed my own website, and merchandise, and I book my own shows. I currently am truly a full independent artist. I enjoy performing my music around the city of Orlando, where I meet a lot of interesting people, and have fun indulging in what seems to be a life of a rockstar at times. It makes me proud when I hear people say my music does something for them, and motivates them to go harder with what they’re doing in life.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was 26 years old I worked at a theme park as a skater/stunt performer. I was doing pretty well for my age, and put myself in a comfortable financial position. Before then, the goal was to have a paid off reliable car, get a house, fine a woman to be my significant other, and be financially stable enough to sustain that life. I focused heavily on making that dream come true, and when I finally did it, I discovered one problem I didn’t take into account. I was working 7 days a week to sustain that life, and if I ever wanted to take a break, I would immediately not be able to afford my life. As I realized there wasn’t an end to the amount of hours I was working if I wanted to keep what I worked for, I became uninterested in the jobs I was working. It was good money, but it was just under enough to be able to be financially free. It was then when I stopped auditioning for those kinds of jobs, and started thinking about pursuing a career that enables true growth. Although I began making music years ago, growing up I never took music too seriously because I was told I need to go college and get a real job. But, from my perspective at that time I realized I would’ve been better off finding my own way, and learn how to generate an income from a source that doesn’t have an income cap. This is the experience that inspired my debut EP titled “My Way.” Even though I had to completely start over financially and rebuild from the ground up, I’m glad I’m now on a path that has the potential to lead to becoming financially free.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Today I focus on creating a foundation to be financially stable without having to rely on hours at a job. I honestly express to achieve such goals in my music where I talk about money management, making smarter financial decisions, and staying focused on my goals. The mission is to continue moving in the direction to achieve financial freedom, and on my journey I strive to find ways to be more creative in expressing my narrative, and write songs that are more relatable to inspire listeners to do the same.
