We caught up with the brilliant and insightful TREVOR ISAKSON a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, TREVOR thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
When I was young I spent a lot of time thinking about space planning before I even knew what space planning was. I’d move the furniture around in my room for better flow and I’d arrange my toys in a way that was more aesthetically pleasing. I didn’t know that’s what I was doing but now as an Interior Designer I know that it’s been an instinct I’ve had my whole life.
My parents built a house when I was nine and walking into the model home for that house was like coming home. I distinctly remember the flyers that the model home had showcasing all of the home styles they could build and I remember staring at them whenever I got a chance. I wanted to spend my life doing this.
Growing up, my family wasn’t the most supportive of my love for Interior Design. I think it was coupled with the fact that I was gay and it just wasn’t in their interest to foster interior design in me. So I did what all “good boys” were supposed to do. I got good grades, got a job in finance, went to college etc. and it wasn’t until my 30’s when my son was born that I decided I wanted to go back to school.
I was cleaning out an old box and found one of those old flyers from that model home and a floor plan that I had drawn for my dream house. It reminded me that I used to spend hours drawing floor plans and I loved it. That was when I decided it was time to change my career and I’ve never looked back. That was five years ago and I’m so glad I made the switch and I wish I would have done it sooner. The floor plan that I drew now hangs in my office and I look at it as often as I can to remind myself who I am and what I love to do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Interior Design used to be a hobby and is now a successful full time business.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Making the mistakes on your own home and correcting them is the best tuition you’ll ever pay. The result of this? A better reputation overall because you’re not making the mistakes when it really counts, like in a client’s home.
No matter what, there will always be mistakes. You cannot foresee every issue that comes up on a design project. There will always be new things to learn and new things to screw up. Owning up to the mistakes, removing your ego and correcting the mistake can take a really unpleasant situation from horrible to happy. Clients will see that you’re human at the end of the day and then see that you’re a human who can make a situation better.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To be completely honest, someone paying you for your creative ideas is so rewarding. Sometimes my clients see the design fee and you can feel the hesitation. It’s totally understandable, a lot of people don’t really know what to expect with an interior designer.
My job is to show my value and break it down in a relatable way. In my business model I provide every potential client a break down of the work that it’s going to take to achieve what they’re looking for. This immediately shows the value of having an interior designer.
At the end of a project it’s really magical to see how happy my clients are and how happy they were to spend the money to achieve what they wanted.
