We were lucky to catch up with Trever Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Trever, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Being a musician was something I was born to do. I’ve spent my entire life closely following my favorite artists, and their backstories. The one thing that each of these characters displayed was an absolute rejection of anything other than their passion. After years of jobs and studies I had zero interest in, I only had my mind set on music. The biggest moment that enabled me to take the dive into a creative career was when my father called me to tell me to pursue what makes me happiest, and to follow my dream of a music career. He told me that I get to make the decision for what my life is about. Without this phone call I would have had a hard time really taking this step, and instead focus on something more conventionally realistic.
Trever, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who don’t know me, I play bass guitar for a Denton based psychadelic rock band King Turtle, as well as a music teacher! King Turtle formed as a band almost 4 years ago, , and have since released a couple records, and played a lot of really cool shows with a lot of amazing people in the DFW area! We draw inspiration from artists ranging from Rush, to Turnstile, to Pink Floyd, and Soundgarden.
We are proud of a lot of amazing shows and events we’ve had the chance to take part in, but most recently we are excited to finally be able to say our new EP “A Metaphor For Suffering” is available to all to listen after two years of writing and recording. It really is the culmination of all of our hard work and a great indication to what’s to come in the future.
We are exceedingly proud to represent our friends in the Denton Music Community as well, all of them are amazing musicians.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think the answer to this question kind of changes with time. Maybe it just has multiple answers. There has been times in the past that I purely was driven by the comfort music provided me when nothing else did, the need to be understood by others, or at least being vulnerable enough to give them the chance to. As I get older, I find more value in interacting with other creatives, and people I admire. I’ve had a few chances to show my music to inspirations of my younger self, and that really has been pushing me to see how far my music can reach, and who I will have the chance to interact with along the way. Truly, the current goal is to connect with as many creatives as I can. People who inspire me to grow.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Without getting into a complex and debatable rant about the economics involved with pursuing a career as an artist or creative, there are plenty of things everyone can do to support cultural and artistic growth. The biggest thing is to just take a chance on the artists in your community. I see too many artists selling nosebleed seats for hundreds of dollars, and not enough support for local artists. Especially when local shows are usually very cheap to attend.
Honestly, I have more insight as someone involved inside the artistic community for what other artists can do for each other. Seeing other artists as allies and supporting them with your own platform promotes growth and exposure for everybody. All artistic cultural growth has been a large collaborative effort amongst creatives, who draw inspiration from each other. What we should be doing as veterans in our communities is lending a hand to the smaller acts, give them a slot at your show, share their post and interact with them. There is massive growth in positive inclusiveness, and for every artist you help, you gain one fan.
