We were lucky to catch up with Trent Perry recently and have shared our conversation below.
Trent, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
As soon as I saw this question I didn’t need to scroll any further. This has been on my heart for such a long time now, especially as we’re in the midst of a tech/social media driven age. Being in the home services world, even the most seasoned veteran tradesmen are worried for the future of their industry as we’re seeing those skills naturally decline. Easy to understand as kids can make a fortune dancing in front of a ring light now. New & innovative ways to make a comfortable living are coming out of the woodworks. With that said, it’s our job as adults to ensure our youth do not lose touch with where they come from, & what got them here. Progression and fresh new styles of living are beautiful to behold, however that doesn’t mean we should completely forget that the music we love today was derived from the Frank Sinatra’s & Mile’s Davis’s of the industry. In a similar light, the ones who built our major cities from the ground up set us up to live as we are now, we should retain those skills while we add our own flare.
That may be a long roundabout way to get here: our kids are at a grave disadvantage if they do not learn how to work with their hands & are reliant on the tech around them to build their homes & to keep them maintained. Furthermore, the process of buying &/or selling those homes should be much more prevalent in our educational system. How, why, & when should they begin to build credit? What does it mean to financially invest/what is a smart or ill-advised investment? What does it take to sell a product or stand in front of a group of people & speak loudly; what does it take to become a just leader? These are things that can easily be implemented into a new & improved education system that encourages creativity, growth, & preparedness over the common curriculum that has put hundreds or even thousands of skilled children at a disadvantage just because they were unable to pass their algebra or chemistry test. I became who I am today because of the game of basketball. All of the time spent with a team, being coached, working hard, succeeding, failing & getting back up, prepared me for my current role in the sales and customer service realm. I highly doubt that I learn & develop those traits if I had focused solely on my science homework. Don’t get me wrong, there are kids who truly have a passion for those things, & there is absolutely a place & reason to engross oneself in those studies; however we need a system that gives children that opportunity to choose, so they can decide at a much earlier stage what they want to do with their lives as adults.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a rather simple man really, with a passion to help others & bring some light & positivity to my peers. I’ve been blessed with a fantastic support system that have been instrumental in my personal & professional growth. I do truly believe in the phrase “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” However, I also often hear my grandpa in my head telling me that “luck comes to those who take advantage of opportunity!” So I’d like to think that I’ve put myself in a good position to foster meaningful relationships & “leverage them”. As aforementioned, I often accredit the game of basketball for developing the skillsets I use in the workplace today. Whether that’s discipline, determination, a strong work ethic, or just the ability to both lead & follow as well as cheer on a team & boost morale.
As far as my day to day goes, I am the marketplace coordinator for a brand new app called MyHome. Built for homeowners, it streamlines the home maintenance process, enabling payments, scheduling, & communication through a single platform. It also builds the “CarFax” for one’s property which allows them to predict what needs to be done around the house in order to stave off large issues or claims within the home. The average homeowner deals with a plethora of headaches, & maintaining that home should not be one of them. Right now, if one needs a plumber or handyman, the process to find, vet, & schedule them can get extremely time consuming – MyHome makes that quick & efficient. Right now, if you have several home service providers working for you on a recurring basis, the process to communicate with & pay them is fragmented – MyHome makes that seamless. I’m proud of the team that I work with & that our morals are in alignment. A veteran-owned company/brand, we are all truly passionate in our mission to help our customers. So to you readers, rest assured that we work day & night to develop this product with the single goal to bring you true & lifelong value!

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Networking! I’ve mentioned “it’s not what you know it’s who you know” right? Well it started with my brother-in-law, who at his 30th birthday party introduced me to his best friend & new boss. I learned that he owned his own plumbing company, & just through fun conversation, he shared that he thought I would do great for him as his public speaker & brand ambassador. With that, I became his marketing director; my first “big boy” job. So I hit the ground running & visited every networking group I could find within a 50 miles radius, & began fostering meaningful relationships for both the business & my own personal life.
After about a year’s time, my boss decided to begin the process of selling his business, so my new network came to my aid. That’s when my friend & current boss/colleague, Gabe Chrismon, sat down with me & told me about this great idea he has about an all-in-one model that can bring ultimate convenience to homeowners around the country. That was nearly two years ago now! The rest is history.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The reason Gabe wanted to sit down with me about his great idea that became MyHome, was due to my reputation around our local networking groups. I was extremely humbled to hear his thoughts about “my ability to command a room”. However, thinking on it, my skillset in a public forum only got me the invitation to sit down. What got me a job was my reputation as a loyal man of my word. This can be built purely off doing what you say you’re going to do on a consistent basis. A mentor of mine, the great Mr. Ed Fox, sat down with me for my very first “1-2-1”, & the very first thing he asked me was “how can I bring you value? How can I help you?”. I loved that, & I took that to every 1-2-1 I had in the future. “How can I help? Who do I know that I can connect you with?”. If I said I was going to do something, I did it; & if I said I was going to be somewhere, I showed up. Over a year of doing that over & over, it amazed me by how much I was able to give, but even more amazed by how much I received. When you practice the simple details like doing what you say you’re going to do, walking into rooms with a positive energy, & looking someone directly in the eye when they’re speaking to you, good things happen in return.
