We recently connected with Trent Moya and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Trent thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
So a time I took a huge risk is when I quit my 9-5 to work on my cake full time. I was the most scariest thing I’ve done. I was working at a restaurant and everything was fine but I was always late because I constantly had to drive around the city double cakes that I made prior to. One day I was standing at work and I told myself I could be at home working on my cakes instead of staying around and not doing anything so I stopped what I was doing looked up and say time to believe in myself. So the next day I quit my job and I begin to invest all my time and energy into my business. And I definitely do not regret that decision you gave me the drive to go ahead and invest all my time and energy into my company to make sure that it grows how I needed it to grow. Because if it didn’t I had no back up plan so I had to give him all and I couldn’t lollygag or give it half of my energy.

Trent, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well let my start my introducing myself. I am Trent Moya ATL’s King of Cakes. My journey with cakes started many years ago when I was growing up in Roselle New Jersey. My grandmother taught me how to do cakes and growing up are used to make a plethora of cakes with her. When she passed away in 2010 she asked me before she left to fulfill a career in baking because he knew how much I loved it. So I decided to go to culinary school and I fell in love with a craft. My company Pastry Playhouse specialize in unique cakes. From photo realistic to cakes that have you questioning “is that really a cake?”. What sets me apart from a lot of other is my unique style in which I do my cakes. I like to add my own flair and uniqueness to each and every dessert I make. What are most proud of are my customers reactions when they see the cakes I make. I’ve been featured on multiple TV shows and articles but besides that it’s just the smile people get knowing that they got a one-of-a-kind cake. The thing I want my potential customers/followers/fans to know about me and Pastry Playhouse is that I feel like I was brought here to be artistic with my food and make people really question what cake can really be. Because you can’t have a great celebration without and unique cake.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
A near death moment for my business was when I was doing the largest cake at the time that I created for a customer, it was a 2 foot tall cake in the shaper “ATL” with unique photos and each of the letters. I left my facility on my way to drop off the cake and on my way to drop off the cake I got into a small car accident And completely destroyed the cake my customer was so upset and I felt so bad because the event started a few moments later.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The thing I think that help build my reputation in my market is my capabilities of creating these one-of-a-kind cakes. Typically when I have a client I ask them what do they like and then from there I’m able to create a unique cake based upon our conversation. Also my very hands-on with my customers allowing them to see the process of me making it to make sure everything goes cording to plan and to their wishes.
