We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tremaine Hemans, Esq. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tremaine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I have ever taken was betting on myself in starting my business.
I was working a job where I loved the actual work, but I was uncomfortable in the environment I was in. I would get serious “Sunday scaries” and my 2 hours commute each way to work only to be greeted with unnecessary reprimands and micromanagement began to weigh on me. I spoke with my loved ones, and the resounding question was “why are you allowing this? You can do this by yourself.” The thing is, many people can speak life into you but until you believe it yourself, they may as well be talking to a wall.
In truth, many times it is our own self-inflicted imitations that cause us to ignore the nagging feeling in our minds that tells us to go for it.
Whenever I am asked how I was able to make that brave decision I credit the time I had already spent in therapy embracing myself worth and learning to trust myself.
My journey as a business owner has been riddled with challenges but at the end of the day, I would have it no other way. I traded making someone else wealthy for creating a comfortable life myself while empowering a brilliant team of women to be their best.
I believe everything on my journey and the work I have done on myself spiritually, mentally and professionally have equipped me to roll with the punches. God has been faithful and I am grateful.

Tremaine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have wanted to be an attorney since I was a child but when I migrated to the United States initially as an international student and I was thrust into the world of US immigration laws and exposed to its inequities, I became very passionate about making a difference in the field.
I am the founder and managing attorney of The Hemans Law Group, P.A. We are an immigration law firm based in Fort Lauderdale Florida but representing clients in all 50 states and around the world in US immigration law. We focus on family-based immigration law. Particularly complexed issues such as defense of domestic violence survivors and erroneous fraudulent findings by the US immigration governmental agencies.
What sets us apart is our commitment to community service including providing scholarships to needy students at various educational levels since our inception; and free consultation drives and community town halls to educate the community of their immigration rights. Also, our thorough curation of evidence to support a client’s story. Each case is given customized, detailed attention which lends to our high success rate.
What I am most proud of about my brand is that I have not compromised the quality of work I demand from myself and my team in order to best serve our clients. I wanted to create a safe space where every client is a name and not a number or dollar sign, and that is what I have created. I treat each case as though I am helping the young woman I was who needed the guidance and expertise I did not have at the time I was going through my immigration journey.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Perfection is unattainable.
For a very long time, in several areas of my life, I demanded perfection from myself which created crippling anxiety that everything was going to come crashing down I made a mistake. I put so much pressure on myself that it started to affect my health and how I show up in the world. I have had to accept through experiencing the humanness of making mistakes and failing at things, that that is part of living. This lesson has freed me up to be braver in my advocacy and in my life in general.
There is something so freeing about releasing that expectation.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting is a necessary skill in business and in life.
2024-2025 have been the year of 100 pivots for me!
I think as business owners we do not talk a lot about the mental fortitude it takes to pivot and persist in times of crisis. I have been thrust into several crises this year and my ability to step outside of the issue at hand and pivot to create solutions was crucial. Leaning on my team and support system and taking care of my mental health during the pivot was also important.
