Trell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?

I was blessed to have both of my parents in my life. They were hardworking, loving, and caring. One thing that I know for sure is that they set a strong foundation for me to develop my relationship with Christ. They had me in church, participating in choir, Sunday school, bible study etc. I had the opportunity to see their faith lived out in real time. As I matured, I knew I needed to increase my dependency on God. I always found my way back home and back to Christ whenever I strayed away and didn’t do right.

Being in community, and teaching me about the faith has helped me to find strength in God during life’s most difficult times. My dad use to always say “take it one day at a time”. I find myself holding on to that more and more as a husband, father, educator and artist.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’m man of God, a husband, father, educator and lyricist from North Carolina. My journey into music started from writing poetry and spoken word. I used poetry as a way to express myself during my teenage years as I entered college, I was encouraged to perform my work around campus. During those times, I attended writing workshops, joined organizations, and performed across the state of North Carolina. A good friend of mine suggested that I try rapping since the spoken word was going so well. I was hesitant at first but eventually gave it a try. After competing my first verse, I fell in love with the art of writing and rapping.

I joined a group called Permanent Ink in 2016 which really took my lyricism to another level. Between the years of 2017-25 I moved to another city, got married, had 5 kids, bought a home, and a car. Life changed for me on many levels. The music that I was making started to change due to my lifestyle change.

I knew that God was tugging on my heart as it pertains to why I was making music and who I was making it for. One part of me was in the world and making music to satisfy the ears of listeners, the other part was making music to bring change and reference God.

In 2024 I decided to make the switch to Christian Hip Hop music, focusing on bringing people closer to Christ, encouraging them to strengthen their faith, and to give God all of the Glory for EVERYTHING!

After the switch, I experienced opportunities that only He could provide, countless interviews, performance opportunities, features from other CHH artist, networking events, podcasts, blogs, etc. I’m forever grateful for what God has done. I strive to be more obedient to him with the gift he’s given me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?

Society can like, share, repost and comment on the goodness and faithfulness of God’s people. The culture needs restoration. We need to be made aware of the greatness going on all over the world. We have the tools of social media and the universal language of music. There is enough negativity in the world from the daily news, mainstream media, and the reality of people’s lives. We all need hope, love, peace, encouragement, strength, and prosperity.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect is hearing my family rap my songs word for word. It’s a blessing when other people do it, but when I hear my children rapping and singing my songs, it gives me confirmation. I know that I won’t always be here, but my music will, and it can always be played to guide, encourage, and strengthen them.
