We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tre’ Mutava a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tre’, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My latest album, “The Reality,” became a major spiritual journey as I dove deep into why I am the way I am and embraced the man I’m meant to be.
I go into detail about conversations I’ve had with myself and God and come to terms with many of the challenges from my childhood.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a twenty-one-year singer/songwriter and producer in Overland Park, Kansas. My love for music began in church, watching my mom sing with the church choir every Sunday morning at a young age and listening to the band play in worship services.
I started writing songs and playing guitar when I was twelve and started producing in high school when I joined a band with a couple of friends. Once they graduated, I was in my junior year, went solo, and continued growing in my craft. During the Covid-19 lockdown, I began working on my first solo project, “The Movies,” and discovered that I could make a real impact from my bedroom with nothing but my laptop and mic.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I live by two philosophies the Lord has instilled in me recently.
1. Make sure that I give everything I have to give in my music
2. Make sure that everything I do is for the glory of God the Father.
I’m not interested in growing a fan base for human success. Fame, financial wealth, and accolades are fleeting.
I want to create music that outlives me. Everything is for the kingdom of Heaven.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Many people that listen to my records have figured out by now that I was raised by a single mom who struggled with alcohol for the majority of my childhood until I was placed in foster care with my brother.
I’ve spent a lot of time working through the traumatic and painful experiences still embedded in my mind and heart from those years, but overall I think the experiences have shaped me into a better man.
I thank God for shaping my mom into the most loving and supportive woman I have ever met in my whole life. I get my will to persevere from her. I’ve never seen anyone work harder than her, from taking care of me all these years to becoming entirely sober for the sake of her kids and being the best version of herself. Truly, she is my greatest inspiration.
