Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Travon Mays. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Travon , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you ever seen (or implemented) a really awesome way to show a client you appreciate them
Some of the things I do when I see my clients to make sure to show them my appreciation Be punctual and consistent with the service I deliver in order to be professional. Show them the utmost respect by being polite and kind to them, and by always letting them know that I appreciate them before and after a service. It’s a great way to strengthen the relationship with my client and it won’t feel like a business transaction; instead, it will feel more genuine between us. I also try to remember the conversations we had so that I can stay up to date on what they are doing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I entered this field by looking within myself for something I genuinely enjoyed learning. I loved having haircuts and the assurance and swagger they give me. So I reasoned, why not give it a try and see if I enjoy it? I ultimately made the decision to enroll in barber school after months of watching YouTube videos, talking to family, friends, and my barber.
I offer a wide range of services. Haircuts, beard treatments, shaves, facials, hair washes, etc. are just a few of the services I offer.
Because I take pleasure in my professionalism and commitment to providing excellent customer service & quality haircuts, I often find solutions for my clients’ difficulties. Having this standard has greatly aided in my clientele growth and helped me distinguish out in numerous ways. The fact that so many of my clients would tell me how they had never been handled the way I did was how I knew it set me apart.
One of the things I am most proud of is how I didn’t give up and kept moving forward to acquire my license. When you’re attempting to earn your license, I observed that it’s one of those things that can make the difference between moving on to the next level and being average. I was aware that obtaining my license would provide me with a numerous of opportunities, and precisely two days after receiving notification that I had passed the state board barber exam, I received an offer to work at the barbershop I had been attempting to get a job at for two years.
In order to avoid giving up while working toward your license, I advise any aspiring barbers to hold on for the ride. You’ll probably face challenges along the way and feel like giving up, but just like anything else in life, when times are tough, that’s when you should put on your boots and focus on how badly you want something. And I assure you that nothing can stop you if you want it badly enough.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I almost gave up on barbering, it was one of the moments I had to demonstrate perseverance on my journey. So, let me explain how I finally gave up. In order to test how I would like working in a barbershop, I took a three-month leave of absence from my job. I ultimately returned to my job out of dread and a fear of failing. when the three months were up. Which turned out to be for the best because if I hadn’t had a job to return to, I wouldn’t have been able to support my family.
When I resumed work, many of my previous clients called me to ask if I would still be able to cut their hair by making house calls. I had previously decided that I would only cut the hair of my children and relatives at this time, therefore I’m done cutting hair. At this point, I had already started a small part-time job picking up trash, which one of my friends had put me on. He was doing it to supplement his income. After doing it for a couple of weeks I absolutely hated it. I was certain there had to be a better job I could take up as a side hustle to supplement my income. So, after giving it some serious thinking, i started back cutting making house calls an it was much better enjoyable then picking up trash. So, after a few weeks passed, I took a look at how many people I had cut and how much money I had made, and I began to believe that this wasn’t so bad after all. Which gave me the push I needed to develop the trust, confidence, and faith that God had me in the palm of his hands. I simply needed to put my trust in him and quit trying to predict how things would turn out.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
God, social media, and word of mouth have all been the most successful marketing tactics that have increased my clientele.
When you put your trust in God and allow him to run your business, he can do more than you could ever ask or imagine. He is the greatest man I know!
Utilizing social media has greatly benefited me because it allows me to be consistent, present, and interactive with people throughout the area. I use it every day to position myself so that potential clients can find me easily.
For me as well, word of mouth has been quite beneficial. It is easy for me to continue to build up a clientele because many of my clients have been recommending me to their relatives and friends. In addition to continuing my education as a student of the game, I am learning from my mentor Jeffery tips and techniques on the quality of haircuts. Jeffery has been my mentor for years and has taught me a lot over the years. I also observe and pick up knowledge from my barber family. Sly, Milton & Aaron, who are quite generous with their knowledge.
