We recently connected with Travon Farris and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Travon, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I attended nail school at Petra V Pro. I never wanted to do anything in the beauty industry/nails. I was grocery shopping and happened to buy a bottle of nail polish. I put it on my counter, and decided I wanted to go to nail school after that. I signed for the course within the next couple of weeks. The course was around 3 months, half online, half in person. I knew I was a business minded individual, but didn’t really know where to focus that energy. I knew that I wanted to work for myself and create a name for myself as well. After completing the course, I practiced nail art for about a year and a half. After I gained the confidence, I finally took the steps needed to work in the nail salon. Stepping away from my practice hand, and finally working on real clients. I am very happy that I interviewed and accepted my first nail technician position at Klever Nails. A nail salon located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I am learning more about time management, customer service, and also perfecting my craft. I believe that practice truly does make progress. And as long as I keep practicing, I can only get better at my craft. I am very happy with progress I have made and continue to make.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Travon Farris. I currently reside in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I’ve always done a lot of office work and customer service positions. Breaking into the beauty industry was never my plan. Even though it wasn’t a part of my vision, it has created so many avenues for me. I am finally able to express myself in a creative way. I currently offer basic manicure and pedicures services at Klever Nails in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I have an Instagram: lavellnails. I currently have 136 followers and still growing. I am excited to grow my following and continue to grow towards the future.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was self doubt and comparing my work to others. The nail industry is constantly growing and evolving. First starting out, it can be easy to compare your work to the pros. The most important lesson I learned is to focus on my self growth. Focus on the things I can do for myself to improve my craft. Also, being proud of the progress/timeline that I’ve made for myself.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is being myself. I can only be me, and people will be drawn to my work/craft. I believe that being my true, authentic self will draw people in. Also, intriguing people to learn more about me. By also demonstrating that through my customer service skills and craft with nail art/technology.
