Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Travis Wilder. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Travis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My partner, Cornell Mann, and I talked about starting this brand a while ago. We trademarked the name years before we did anything with it. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, we knew this was the perfect opportunity to introduce our brand as a form of hope during these very uncertain times. We wanted people to activate their Faith in God more than ever and we just so happen to do so by utilizing clothing products. We talk about God and having Faith in God all the time, but it’s one thing to talk the talk and another to walk the walk. We decided that there was no better time to push God, Faith, and Love, and so God Got Me was born.
Travis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Me and my partner both PKs (Preacher’s Kids). Both are parents are/were preachers and so we grew up in the church and God has always been a part of our lives. We talk about God everyday in some way, shape, form, or fashion. We pray together and talk about future goals together. So, our Faith in God is really a lifestyle. It’s a part of our everyday life, so running the brand has never seemed like work so to speak. We strategically introduce new designs as it relates to our customers. We also give away free shirts and we are always thinking of ways to give back. Our lifestyle brand was created to reinforce the fact that no matter what life throws your way, you can rest in the fact that God always has your back.
As we expand, we also plan to employ felons and people with a strike on their record to give them another chance since that is so frowned upon in Corporate America.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Cornell and I were connected thru the game of basketball. We both played at the same high school (10 years apart) and we both played in college. Cornell’s uncle, Coach Don McNeal, was my high school coach and his brother was my high school assistant coach. So that’s how we originally were introduced. When I would come home from college in the summer time, Cornell, who became a successful college coach in his own right, would take me thru high level college workouts and that’s where I bond really grew and strengthened. We became like brothers and the rest is history.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When we first launched the business, I would meet people to drop shirts off and was more hands on in the beginning, but as the pandemic heightened and grew bigger, we had to do a full pivot to strictly an online business. So, I had to learn the e-commerce game very quick and still learning every day. It is so much that goes behind running an online business and so much to learn. It can really be a college course in itself. So, we definitely had to pivot that way as a result of the pandemic.
