We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Travis Starr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Travis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?

What my parents did right was support my crazy ideas. I was a kid that had to learn the hard way so it was very important they let me bump my head so I learned what worked rather than force me in the other direction.

Travis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I stumbled into the music industry after wanting to invest in a business but not knowing what business to invest in. My friend who is a producer, spent a lot of time in recording studios so I asked him if there was good money in owning one. He explained how the recording budgets were distributed and I was sold. After my studio PBM Recording Studio, was up and running, I tried the artist management role. I didn’t see my skills helping the artist as much as it should so I quickly gave that up. After all my other efforts were exhausted, my brother told me I should try to record something myself. I recorded my first and loved every second of it.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?

Earlier in my career, I would record songs that I loved but was afraid to let anyone hear them in fear they wouldn’t like or understand them. Now 10 years in the industry, I realize there’s an audience for any and everything. Now I don’t second guess myself. If I like it, I put it out and let everyone else make their own decisions.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding part of being an artist is getting paid to do something I would already be doing even if I had to do it for free.
