We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Travis Littrell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Travis below.
Travis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
All four of us have been in different projects throughout our time as musicians but none close to as meaningful and cherished as this one. When you’re doing your favorite things with your favorite people, you know you have something special.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hive Mind Honey is a four piece psych rock band based out of Fort Worth that came together in a very unique way. Music has always been a driving force in our lives but this project is the most special and unique we will ever have. Jordan and Riley are eternal best friends that have spent over a decade of their lives playing music together. Joe has always been a student and one of the knowledgeable people I’ve ever met when it comes to playing and learning music. As for myself, Travis, music has always been that space where I can put my mind away and be so enthralled with the here and now. Been in several bands but nothing as close to as ubique and special as Hive Mind Honey. We were destined to play together as mutual friends and our own personal life skills brought us together as I (Travis) met Jordan and Riley for the first time in 2017 at a music festival (Art Outside) close to Austin TX.
Riley is a Doctor of Chiropractic who just opened up his own practice off main Street in Fort Worth (ENTHEOS CHIROPRACTIC) and was giving adjustments at the festival when our mutual friend met him and introduced us. I did not know at that time but we would be destined to influence and encourage the growth within each other for years to come.
The first time I heard Jordan play drums I was in my previous band but I had the thought of “you’re gonna be my drummer but you don’t know it yet ” we both fit each other’s style so effortlessly. This was exactly the kind of guy I knew I wanted to make music with.
I had know Joe through the same mutual friend I met Jordan and Riley through and he always astonished me with his knowledge and background of music. From playing in band and always pushing his craft as a DJ, Joe fit in flawlessly with the band being the final piece that we needed to be complete 🙌
We were initially going to be a 3 piece band with Riley on bass but things sometimes change dramatically…. Riley was shot in the fall of 2020 through the arm. We had played one open mic with him on bass at Deep Ellum Art Company but as we all know “in the end the only constant is change.” They told him he may never have full use of his arm and may not return to his chiropractic practice for some time but we all know Riley and his love and determination would not allow that to be true as he was back in practice just a few months after the incident. This had a major ripple effect as we now were just there for our friend and his recovery. Shortly after, with our new rejuvenation for life, we decided what we had was still special and our desire to create was never stronger. He started to play keyboard and we all gave him the space and patience needed to grow and learn his new instrument. During these growing months we all learned and bonded together, bringing Joe in on bass, Riley learning his new instrument, we played our first house party show just 4 months after our beloved Dr Riley was injured 🤯. With love and determination you can do anything and we truly believe that.
Our first real show was June of 2020 at Troy’s at Texas Live and we have not looked back. Now with our first album out “Transmissions” and with major and incredible festivals on our resume “Backwoods” and Rancho Relaxo” we are excited and staying ready for what may come. We all just feel so blessed to be here making music with our best friends. It trulydoesn’t get much better than this
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me personally is the influence encouragement. If just one person in the crowd is influenced to go pick up a guitar or learn a new instrument that can bring then happiness and joy in their lives then I did well. I try to evoke emotion through music and performance that will hopefully stick with someone and encourage them to find their own flow
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting each other is key. There does not need to be a competitive mindset to this as the true competition is you vs yourself. Lifting each other up and supporting one another is the absolute best thing for our scene. Each one teach one and we can build this thing together
