We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Travis Koch. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Travis below.
Travis, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always loved to draw and had a strong creative side when I was a child. But my school and career took me on another path and I ended up becoming an engineer. Although still creative, I slowly lost touch with my artistic side until I was in my 30’s. On a whim, I started painting windows for a friend’s business one holiday season and it unlocked a deeper passion within me. During the Covid lockdowns, I had an opportunity to learn and dive further into that passion. Ever since then, my art has slowly grown and expanded into a small business. I still work as a full-time engineer, but this is what I love to do and will do as much as I can in my spare time.
Travis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started as a window painter doing temporary holiday window splashes and advertisments. I love the simplicity and freedom of window painting. Usually being temporary, I don’t have to worry too much about perfection and just get to have fun.
Over time I started to learn more about sign painters and muralists. It opened up a whole new world that I never saw before. I became obsessed with learning as much as I could about these crafts and following the work of so many great artists. I even went to a Walldogs Muralfest two states away without much money or knowing much of anything just to learn from some of these great people. It was an amazing experience.
I still do a lot of window painting, especially around the holidays, but I have being doing a lot more murals and signs lately which has really helped expand my skills and portfolio.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It definitely gives me a creative outlet and lets me see the beauty in the things made by human hands. But I also love to help out local businesses. I enjoy working for people who want something unique and creative to breathe life into an atmosphere that they are trying to cultivate. And I love being able to make their ideas come to life.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I am lucky to live in a small community that wants something unique and artistic versus something cookie-cutter. But I don’t think enough people know about the benefits a hand painted sign, window, or mural can add to their business or property. There is not just the aethetics, but it is something that is hand crafted, one-of-a-kind, and has a longevity that other mediums can’t match. The more that people can see these benefits, the more wonderful our environments can be. And also the more valuable artists will be.
