We were lucky to catch up with TRACY THOMAS recently and have shared our conversation below.
TRACY, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The Business of The Kingdom,LLC was officially launched in January 2018, specializing in serving the administrative side of businesses, ministries and events. However, the work actually began long before. Since the late 1990s, I have served on various teams in my church and community organizations and always found myself landing in the administrative role. During this time, I not only found that I had a passion for administrative work but also a yearning for that work to be done well. I also found that during this time, not only did my administrative strengths grow but I also realized that that these skills were not a talent, it was a Heaven-sent gift. Administrative tasks (ie communication correspondence, schedule management, document creation etc) are usually not tasks that many enjoy. Such that I found myself spending much time to make sure they were done well for the people that I served. A mentor of mine encouraged me to evaluate the amount of time that I was spending to serve well administratively and therefore consider that my passion should be more than a “hobby”. As the saying goes, “time is money”. In 2017, I finally decided to step out and turn my passion into a business and filed the necessary paperwork with the State of Maryland. The Business of The Kingdom, LLC was officially launched on January 8, 2018.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in Rochester, NY and currently reside in the Washington DC metropolitan area. During my childhood, I grew up in church where I served as President of the Youth Choir from the time that I was a freshman in high school until my senior year of high school, all while being a student in the International Baccalaureate Program at Wilson Magnet High School and an intern at 103.9 WDKX radio station where I planning song lists, executed production schedules and researched content for radio shows. In 2009, I was the first African American female student at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to receive a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering with a minor in Business Administration. Although I was involved in various community organizations while she lived in Rochester, the longest running group that I was part of was a community choir called Jason Wright & The Master’s Touch, which she joined in 2004 during her freshman year of college and served until 2013 on the administrative team, managing internal communication within the choir, booking requests and planning travel logistics. After graduating from RIT, I engaged in full time employment at The Boeing Company in the Southern California region. During this time, I was introduced to Project Management in the commercial and Government sectors of Boeing and thus relocated to the Washington DC metropolitan area in 2010 to pursue opportunities in that field with Boeing. In 2013, I received my master’s degree in Project Management from Capella University and then obtained my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification in 2015. I am currently still working as Project Manager in the Government sector. In addition to working professionally in the Government sector, I am also on the administrative staff at Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church, where I have been a member for the past 14 years. The aforementioned experiences led me to discovering my passion for administration and therefore turn it into a business. For this reason, I launched The Business of the Kingdom in January 2018, which provides administrative support services, such as communication correspondence, schedule management, document creation etc to businesses, ministries and events and hosts classes to teach best practices in administrative services and business practices. Since its inception, The Business of The Kingdom has been blessed to provide administrative services for 11 events (including 8 conferences), 3 businesses, 5 preachers (2 of which are Sr. Pastors), and 2 music artists.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being consistent and serving all clients the way that I would want to be served (with priority, excellence, honesty and respect).
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. Satisfied customers spread the word better than I can about my business.
