We were lucky to catch up with Tracy Marrow recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tracy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When my daughter was turning 4, I wanted to give her a princess tea party. I asked her “what kind of cake do you want?”. She said, “mommy I want a teapot cake”. I told her she would have a teapot cake. I started pricing cakes at local bakeries and I was absolutely astonished by the prices. A small teapot cake was upwards of $250.00. I certainly couldn’t afford that as a single mom of 2. So I said to myself “how hard could it be?”. Boy was I wrong. I watched a youtube video and ended up making the cake myself and it was horrible, to me atleast. My daughter loved it, even though it looked nothing like a teapot. The party guests thought it looked cool for it being my very first cake ever. I continued on teaching myself and here I am, making 3D sculptured cakes.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a mom of 4, full time government employee (supervisor), baker, and PhD candidate. I got into baking because of my daughter’s whimsical ideas. I originally only baked for family and close friends, then those people told others about me and it developed into an at-home bakery business. I am juggling a lot but I am proud of following through with all of my goals. Although none of my degrees have anything to do with baking or business, who knows what may be in store for this business in the future. I get a lot of backlash from people regarding my pricing. There are some who think I’m expensive, while others who know the quality of my work don’t think I charge enough. Either way, I’m happy and still here.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my consistent quality of work and dedication to my clients satisfaction is what helped build my reputation withing this growing market.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has come from social media and word of mouth referrals.
