Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tracy Marroquin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tracy, appreciate you joining us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
We are proud to say that we have grown at least 20% yearly since our inception in 2018. Last year we experienced a 50% growth year over year. We attribute this growth to our dedication to our business and the constant learning and growth mindset that we have developed.
As the head formulator, I can tell you that we can produce quality products faster and more efficiently now than when we started in 2018. This increase in production is due to years of repetition, mastering my recipes, and upgraded tools and equipment that help me get done quicker.
Our new shop at Valle Vista Shopping Center in Westminster also helped us scale. Not only do we have a larger kitchen area for making our artisan goods, but we also negotiated some key points into our lease that allow us to advertise our business better and do events at our store, bringing in potential customers.
For example, since moving into our new shop, we have partnered with local healers and holistic practitioners for events at our store. These events are a way for Leanna Organics to build a community around the idea of holistic health. Our first event, which was an Inner Child Healing Guided Meditation, was just last weekend and was a huge success.
We are five years in with our business as I write this in June 2023. I can confidently say that we are a stronger company that is more profitable and helps more people. The ups and downs have made us stronger and more dedicated to our business and the idea of holistic wellness.
Tracy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Leanna Organics, situated in Westminster, CO, is a boutique specializing in CBD skincare and wellness. Our journey began in 2015 when Tracy, the founder, and co-owner, crafted her own range of natural beauty items for loved ones. In 2017, Scott, Tracy’s husband and co-owner, stumbled upon CBD salve to address his hip and back issues. Frustrated with opioids and daily ibuprofen, CBD presented a simple and natural solution.
This discovery prompted our move to Colorado and the integration of CBD into Tracy’s self-care collection. Leanna Organics emerged to provide affordable, organic, and plant-based skincare and wellness products.
Leanna Organics prioritizes your beauty and wellness. We carefully choose natural ingredients, fresh oils, and locally tested hemp for our self-care items.
Our small-scale production in Westminster CO ensures attention to detail and a personal touch, unlike mass-produced goods.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
We opened our first retail store in November of 2019. We didn’t know much about business or having a lease back then. We signed our lease without reading it for the most part and found out after we moved in that our landlord would not allow the word “CBD” anywhere on the exterior of the building.
Despite the hidden clause in our lease that disallowed us from advertising what kind of business we are, we prospered at our first location. When lease renewal came up, we knew that given the market for commercial real estate, we had options.
So we started shopping and quickly found our new home at the Valle Vista Shopping Center. We were smart enough to read the lease this time before signing and ensured we didn’t have to hide that we were a CBD company.
Now, we have a big sign that says “Leanna Organics CBD” facing a busy intersection. That sign brings in a lot of customers, and we are grateful for the lesson we learned from our first lease.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Leanna Organics is self-funded. We put so much love into our business because it is ours. We have been approached several times about funding and have happily turned it down because Leanna Organics was started with the savings account of its owners.
