We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tracey Horn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tracey below.
Tracey, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
I think it might be interesting to share how much the industry of advertising has changed with technology in the past 27 years. I started before there was email or even creating a pdf.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My father was on Madison Avenue in the height of industry and I grew up around the creatives and interesting artists in Connecticut. They’d all come to the house, so I think it was ingrained in me. I always enjoyed being creative as a kid – from plays to painting. After earning my degree in fine art and film at the University of Arizona, I decided to head back to New York City and asked my father for all his contacts. I did get a job there with one his old producers, but before I headed back east, I took a trip up to see the Grand Canyon. I was in Arizona for 8 years and had never traveled north and felt I could not go back east without seeing one of the seventh wonders of the world! On our way, we stopped in Prescott, Arizona and I fell in love with this charming community. I decided to take a detour and move here instead and that was in 1994. I got a job at the only small boutique agency that was here. I met a writer there named Robin Helken and we both knew that the agency was barely hanging on and decided to open our own and called it Helken & Horn Advertising Agency. In 1995 at the age of 26 I was a business owner and knew nothing about owning a business. I learned quickly and I’m still going strong today with many changes along the way! There are many client stories I could share and many community involvement moments I can also provide.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We’re a small community still here in Prescott (even though its growing so quickly) and I believe doing what I say I’m going to do has been a huge part of my success. Referrals have been a big part of our client base.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Again, word of mouth. We’ve been fortunate enough (and I saw we, because without the writers and designers at my side) to have some of the top businesses and most reputable business owners in the area. From working on camping about propane to helping a non-profit client with a new brand, every day is different.
