We recently connected with Tracey Gee and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, TRACEY thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
One day, I was meeting with a client who truly reshaped my view of success. He was someone who had “made it” by nearly every traditional measure. He’d graduated from one of the world’s best colleges, built a thriving career in finance, and was well-respected in his field and his community. Now, at 65, he was at a crossroads, questioning what his next season of life would hold.
During our conversation, he posed a question that struck me. It was something I think many of us wrestle with, but he asked it with such clarity and raw honesty. I could feel the weight of his dilemma as he said, “I know there are things I do because others value them—they see them as my strengths. But then there are things that truly bring me joy, the things that make me feel most alive. Those two aren’t always the same. My question is… does that difference really matter?”
In his words, I felt the universal tension between doing what others expect of us and pursuing what genuinely lights us up. And I believe this tension holds a profound truth. Our joy, our sense of aliveness, is often the most powerful clue to discovering our unique magic in the world.
So when I think about success, I believe one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves is, “Success is great—but what does it truly mean to me?” Because if we follow what brings us joy, our definition of success may look completely different from someone else’s—and I think that’s a beautiful thing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into coaching and leadership development has been shaped by a blend of experiences, interests, and, to be honest, a few lessons learned the hard way. Growing up, I was encouraged to pursue a lot of different activities, but I’ll admit, piano lessons just didn’t stick. However, when I discovered dance, something clicked. Despite starting with barely any flexibility, I loved it so much that I kept going back and improving. Eventually, I became the captain of my high school’s state championship-winning dance team, dancing hours a day and never wanting to miss a single minute. This contrast between piano and dance taught me a key lesson that I carry into my work today: there’s no substitute for knowing yourself and investing in areas where you find your natural genius.
Today, I’m a certified coach and consultant focused on helping people unlock their authentic leadership genius. I’m certified in several frameworks—Gallup StrengthsFinder, Cultural Intelligence, the Enneagram, and Working Genius because I’m fascinated with tools that help people understand who they really are and how to bring that to the world.
What sets my approach apart is this passion for aligning people with what truly lights them up. My work spans leadership coaching, team development, and workshop facilitation, all designed to help individuals and teams maximize their strengths, deepen their cultural intelligence, and lead with clarity and confidence. I’ve had the privilege of working with organizations across industries, from nonprofits like Firm Foundation and Nomi Network to well-known companies such as Coca-Cola, Amazon, and the Miami Heat.
I’m most proud of the real change I get to witness in my clients. Helping leaders discover their own “dance”—that thing they’d never want to skip out on—is truly inspiring. I believe that when people lead from their authentic strengths, they create not only better results but a more equitable and caring world. This work genuinely feels like my own Christmas morning, and I’m honored to be part of so many amazing journeys.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
When TikTok was just starting to take off, I didn’t know anyone else who was creating content on there. Back then, the perception was still that TikTok was only for dancing teenagers. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I decided to experiment with videos about topics I care deeply about—personal and leadership development, self-awareness, and creating alignment in life and work.
A few months later, I got an email from someone claiming to be a VP for the Miami Heat. They asked if I could come and offer training for their professional dance team. My husband suggested I double-check that it wasn’t a scam! But it turned out to be completely legitimate, leading to an incredible meeting. As it happens, she had found me on TikTok. I ended up working with the Miami Heat for three years, becoming one of their most frequently invited speakers. It was a fantastic experience, and if I hadn’t been willing to feel a little silly and experiment with content in my own style, I never would have come across that opportunity.
So, my advice is to find spaces where you can experiment and give yourself the freedom to try new things without worrying about being perfect. You’ll be surprised by what doors it can open.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For me, word of mouth has always been the most powerful driver of new clients. I still remember the first time someone told me they found me through a recommendation from a friend, even though I didn’t know them personally. It’s incredibly powerful when others understand who you are and what you do well enough to recommend you to someone else.
These experiences have also taught me that work begets more work, which is why consistency is so important. I don’t believe in overnight success, but I do believe that, with consistency, results compound over time.
