Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tracee Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tracee, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
When I first thought of T. Alexandria Medical Spa, I had no idea it would develop into where it is now. The idea originated from me desiring to be my own boss but I wanted to remain in the Medical field, as I had worked extremely hard to become a Registered Nurse, therefore, I desired to continue to utilize my professional licensure. The main steps I had to take were, for one, stepping out on faith and believing that I could bring my ideas to life, secondly, I had to ensure that I was financially stable to start my own Medical Spa, while maintaining my other financial obligations, primarily as it related to my family and third, ensuring I was operating within the scope of my licensure and abiding by the rules and regulations within the industry. There were a lot of challenges that came with starting my very own Medical Spa. For starters, finances. I depleted my savings and invested into the start up costs for my spa. Maybe not the smartest decision, however, entrepreneurship teaches you along the way and that is when you learn on what to do, what not to do and what you can do better, When you know better, you do better. Another challenge I came across, was that no one was willing to mentor me, especially those who looked like me. I found that I was seen as competition rather than one to collaborate and that was very disheartening. Advise I would offer to a young professional starting their own Medical Spa, is to thoroughly research the rules and regulations, create a business plan, make smart decisions along the way and invest in a mentor to assist you along the way, to avoid costly mistakes.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Registered Nurse by trade and I ventured into the Medical Spa business by taking courses and receiving certifications that aligned with that of a Certified Cosmetic Registered Nurse. Being knowledgeable but certified are key to your success in this industry. At T. Alexandria Medical Spa, our motto is “i define my own definition of beauty”, which means, my staff and I, customized each patients care to their own specific needs and desires. No two people are alike, therefore, we tailor our services to the individual and that is where we find success in our clients. The thing I am proud of the most is my inability to quit. T. Alexandria is going into our 7 year of business and that has truly been a blessing to my family and I, as well as, my staff. As we continue grow, I only hope that our clientele will continue to grow and appreciate our success, as without their support, my vision wouldn’t be where it is today.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As T. Alexandria headed into her 6th year of business, life hit me and it hit me hard. I had to make decisions that took me away from the spa full time and it was very difficult to manage my personal life and my business. There were days I could barely get out of bed, friends started to disappear, my absence affected my staff and my sadness reflected in my children’s behavior. Basically, depression took over my life but I knew I was a highly functioning individual with depression, therefore, not everyone knew but those close to me recognized my absence, Some offered assistance and some drifted away but I never faulted anyone, I simply was just trying to stay alive and be present for my children. I dropped the ball a few times and I battled with myself daily on how to get back to the way of life I knew before my tragedies took over and ensure that my staff was taken care of. When life hits you, you never know how you are going to respond. It caught me by surprised and my business and staff suffered. However, I am here to tell you: That if you keep pushing, striving, praying and have faith in God, HE will turn things around in your favor and those around you who continued to support and love you will be rewarded with God’s favor and my forever gratitude of appreciation to them.. No one is perfect and we all have daily struggles but it’s how you handle the adversity that defines who you are personally and as an Entrepreneur. I am extremely thankful and grateful that my mom and father has instilled the character trait of tenacity in me because giving up as never been option for me. Thank you mom and dad :)
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I strongly believe that what has helped me build my reputation within my market is my honesty and the willingness to share my personal real life with those who follow and support me. Social media has been a huge contributor to my success and I chose to share my life, the good, the bad, the pretty, the ugly, I shared it all. Therefore, people could relate to me. What you see online is what you receive in person. I have never tried to be someone who I wasn’t and I never tried to keep up with The Jone’s. My followers witnessed my wins, as well as, my losses. Honesty, loyalty and integrity are three characteristics that has taken me farther in life than my 4 degrees. In addition, my academic background has also provided me with credibility in the industry, My dad refers to me a career student, however, I am a learner and I love to expand my knowledge beyond the masses and I strive to always know more than what I knew the year before. Evolving and growing as an Entrepreneur is key to longevity and being an expert in your respective industry.
