Alright, Toyia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.

In 2017, I was severed from my job and was unable to find work after working for almost 20 years as a Human Resources Professional. I applied to over 75 jobs and I received not 1 phone call. During this time I was also going through a spiritual awakening at a very rapid pace. Things that I never knew or understood were being revealed to me including warning messages about my failing health. A few years prior I had an inclination something was wrong with me, but after visiting with my personal physician, a pulmonologist, getting X-rays, EKGs, and having 14 viles of my blood drawn, I came back with a clean bill of health. None of the doctors even shared with me my pre-existing issues that should have shown on the various tests they ran. Fast forward, my health started deteriorating rapidly and I was spiritually guided on how to take care of myself. As a result, I wanted to share with others the knowledge that guided me.

Kinky Knots Cafe, a Health and Wellness Business, started as an endeavor to share my health and beauty regimen and things that I felt would be useful for anyone who desires to improve their overall health and wellness. I wanted to provide a forum where we could share information and help one another on our journey within life in a way that was proactive and supportive.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Sure! My name is Toyia, without the La, Renee Bryant. I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio and no matter how many times I try to venture out I somehow always find myself right back here! I am a single mom with 4 beautiful children, Britini, Adja, Mai, and Mohamed whom I affectionately call BAMM! Everything that I do is for them! I am their mom and that is all! Even my business, Kinky Knots Cafe, was designed in part because of them. I wanted to teach them that should they ever find themselves in a position where all of the doors start to close on them, find enough love within themselves to keep moving forward. I want them to learn how to overcome adversities by leveraging their innate capabilities to become a creator and learn how to execute plans. I started this business so that they could see the type of work it takes to be successful. It’s a lot of work, late nights and early mornings. While I am new in the world of entrepreneurship I believe it’s so important for them to witness this journey so that they can have a realistic perspective of what it will take to find success.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

My background is in Human Resources. After building my entire network and expertise in Human Resources, launching a career in a new industry was difficult. I had to build my knowledge as it relates to understanding all facets of the human body and how to effectively create programs to support my clients. When I started I was fortunate to be in an environment of solitude so that I could focus and dedicate the time necessary to grasp new concepts and the overall industry. While that was a huge pivot, at the end of that endeavor putting together my business model was a breeze. I attribute my MBA with a dual concentration in International Business and Management, Innovation and Change and 20 years in the field of HR supporting public and private companies to laying the foundation needed to turn my newfound knowledge into what is now my business Kinky Knots Cafe!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

8 months after commencing and finalizing the 5th phase of my business model, my Headquarters, my home, was decimated by a huge fire. The only items preserved were my products and all of my technical equipment. I couldn’t believe it! It was a sign to me from the universe saying don’t stop, I got you, keep moving forward! So here I am about to embark on my 2nd year as I head out on this road and begin promoting Kinky Knots Cafe and my flagship products and services, the KK Cafe skin care line, Power77 Unleashed 90 Day Fitness and Nutrition program, Summer Yoga Classes, the Proactive is the Way Podcast, and my KK Cafe Collection where you can get the latest and greatest Pearls of Wisdom activewear that you can wear everyday to serve as a reminder of all of the enlightening sayings that we hope will help you to live life fully and unashamed!
