We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Toya Knowles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Toya below.
Alright, Toya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My first job I created at home, I was the kid on the block doing all my friends hair in the neighborhood. I was 13 years when I started. When I got out of high school I enrolled into a Pivot Point International beauty school in 1990. After enrolling I found a salon to work in as an assistant and did hair at my parents home Sunday. I absolutely LOVE what I do after 33 years
Toya , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What sets Toya apart from her competitors is that she never thinks of them that way. “We all offer our own uniqueness,” says this modest guru. “I’ve come to realize that clients come to you for more than just hair. It’s the experience of how you make them feel while they’re at the salon and how you make them feel when they leave. Creating an experience is key for me.”
It’s no surprise that when it comes to hair products, you’ll find a top brand on the shelf at her salon – John Amico Professional Haircare System – www.johnamico.com/iamtoyaknowles.
When you book an appointment and settle back in the chair for one of Toya’s haircuts and styles, you’ll also discover that you’re in the presence of someone who knows a healthy thing or two about everyone’s favorite topic – food. “My second passion,” says Toya. “When it comes to what you eat, I even offer a class in how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.” Most importantly LOVE YOURSELF
With her current promotional offer of $20 off your first visit, and her gently loving reminders to be good to yourself with more fruits and veggies, this Short Hair Guru will become a part of your lifestyle you won’t want to live without. Book today!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I Surely would . Hair saved my life at a young age I got married at 18 and after about year and half my relationship became very violent. For me I loved making women feel good and at a young age I thought looking good on the outside was the keys to regain my self confidence but with help from God and friend and family I started learning beauty comes from within. My mission for myself was to never allow myself to get in a space of low self esteem & insecurities.. So at this point I had to start loving Toya first and learning what that looks like.. Today I commit myself to me first and second my clients I often talk to them about self-care in my chair from what we eat, sleep, move. Mindset and laughter
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
What’s most helpful is Never quit on something you are so passionate about .. what you Love doing .. the key to longevity is education, evolving with change and taking care of you . It’s really all the thing that beauty school didn’t teach us… Understanding your number the Business part , how to take care of you which will allow you to have longevity like I said before taking care of your business and you health it’s all about create an healthy Lifestyle
