Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Torrey Purvey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Torrey, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’m hoping to build a legacy that everyone can benefit from. What’s the point of having a big platform if you’re only helping yourself. I’m not sure what people will say but whatever it is I want to be remembered for leaving and creating good memories they can look back on in memory or in print and say Torrey was a good person.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an educator by profession (band teacher) and a photographer/videographer the rest of the time. Photography was borne from a few reasons. 1. I’m a creative. I have this need to create and do things that makes me feel good that others can see. 2. I’m a believer that a person should reinvent themselves 7 to 10 years to keep from getting bored or settling.
My career as a photographer has evolved over the years. Started with archetecture photographer because I like handsome and smart looking buildings. I went to fashion next as a challenge. By doing that it led me to being a staff photogrpapher for Kansas City Fashion week and Austin Fashion Week. Next challenge was sports photography. From there I excelled to the highest I could here in Oklahoma shooting NBA (Oklahoma City Thunder) basketball games. Ive done those things and have beein in print and all over multiple verifed social media account. (My photos not me). Currently it’s video and that’s going great. I’ve worked with and interviewed university presidents, school superintendents, done work with Baylor University Oral History department, Bernice King to name a few. This current challenge is keeping me on my toes.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One particular goal for me is to be an adventure photographer. I would love to go to remote places to photogrpaher or record amazing happeings that most don’t get to see and bring it to the masses.

Have you ever had to pivot?
As photography became more accessible and affordable to mainstream and lay people the market became saturated which drove rates downward. Don’t get me wrong competition is good. I believe there’s enough money to go around. Nobody should be talking down another person to give them a leg up. With the saturation of the market I made the move to different markets in my career. Either looking for higher paying clientele to having clients the perfer their anonimity and privacy. Therefore my photos may not be seen on social media but it does feel good when I see my work blown up lifesize on the clients wall.
